TheMacBeth Project was built out of a community outcry for more African American representation in the classical theater arts.
We are producing 12 of Shakespeare’s plays, edited down to 60 minute or less, performed live online to audiences worldwide.
These episodes will be added to an online repository of cultural work provided completely free to the public in perpetuity.
Our project is using new creative energies to push boundaries while including themes of ancient tradition, contemporary mainstream culture, and Afrofuturism.
This collaborative effort is helmed by Artistic Director, Khimberly Marshall, who will produce an innovative script and production design specific to each story. Each episode will feature 9 performers playing multiple roles, and include energetic digital video backgrounds creating thematic scenery for the story, and innovative digital sound scape’s, creating a virtual digital world for the performers to engage in.
Embracing tech innovations to tell our stories, we decided to use an online platform to produce this series. This helps us contribute to the resilience of our cultural community, by providing an inclusive environment that fosters future work endeavors for artists with training in a tech field. Using this technology gives our patrons an opportunity to engage with us on an immediate yet intimate level, it provides youth training in utilizing technology to push creative endeavors and performance opportunities for artists of color.
Shakespeare: Rebuilt is infused with the voices of many generations and variances in our communities of color. It bridge’s economy and class, and removes boundaries that separate people from their own culture. Infusing technology with an African-American lens for future generations of luminaries is the goal of this project.
The funds will be used to purchase audio, light, and video equipment for production and to pay our artists.

THE MACBETH PROJECT
The MacBeth Project is designed to infuse more classical art into historically underserved communities. It is a 5 year project producing the story of MacBeth, co-created with a different cultural asset each year, infusing the productions with both cultural identities. With this partnership we will continue our community engagement element of the Shakespeare: Rebuilt, facilitating focus groups and college lectures.
Our productions focus on the culture of the intended audience members, often incorporating themes and requests gathered from our focus group meetings. These focus group meetings are designed to bring community members, activists, artists, and business owners together to discuss their views on theater, their experience being a person of color as audience members, as artists, and co-creators, and on Shakespeare and MacBeth specifically.
The MacBeth Project will reach approximately 87 community members in focus group/workshop work, 400 high school students with school presentations, 200 university students thru our Folsom College lecture series, 2000 audience members thru ticket sales, and 6 cultural institutions in partnership; each year for our 5 year mission.

SOJOURNER TRUTH MULTICULTURAL ART MUSEUM & THE BRICKHOUSE GALLERY
Through The MacBeth Projects partnership with Sojourner Truth Multicultural Art Museum & The Brickhouse Gallery in Oak Park, we are facilitating “Soulful Sonnets”: An after school program for youth artists of color, including a series of workshops and pop-up events centered on the art and poetry of Shakespeare, specifically his sonnets. These will culminate in an evening of dramatically produced prose offered free to the community. Each of the “30 Minute Shakespeare” episodes will feature a youth artists’ sonnet performance. Our purpose is to foster understanding of the sonnet and production needs while assisting the students and community members as they build their version of their selected sonnet, in their image, with their own production concepts and themes utilized/incorporated into the structure of the piece.
