I never imagined, 18 years ago, when I created the Peekskill Coffee House that one of its driving missions of bringing people together would be something that would put my employees and customers at risk. We have been making adjustments every day and trying to do the right thing for EVERYONE in regards to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The emotional toll of the unknown variables that are beyond my control and the daily changes are weighing heavily on me and my staff. I feel that it is better to try to minimize the spread of the virus and the only way to do this is to ensure that any asymptomatic carriers are not unknowingly spreading the virus to others. Which is why I have made the incredibly difficult decision to temporarily close our doors at this time. We plan to re-open in two weeks, on April 6th 2020, as long as all staff continues to remains healthy, has not been in contact with anyone that is sick, and government allows.
You cannot be a barista or food service worker from home. The generosity of our customers, to staff, through tips is one of the ways our employees are able to get a livable wage. Unfortunately, unemployment alone will not be enough. I will do everything I can financially to assist my workers during this time. However, the truth is, I am a small business owner with limited resources and many unknowns during this current situation.
