Studying microplastics in our oceans and find solutions to tackle plastic pollution
Oceantrash is an artistic project bringing awareness about plastic in your environment. It will BE the sollution for replacing this amazing product playing such a big role in your daily lives. Oceantrash would like to be a creative rehab to your plastic addiction.
I am Marjan Verschraegen
Born in Ghent, Belgium, 28 of May 1975.
Studied graphic design, languages and got my masters in Photography.
I moved from Belgium to Alabama in 2015, but started visiting the Gulf Coast area in 2008.
When I moved here, I wanted to be active in the community and started volunteering for Share The Beach, a sea turtle conservation program. As I was doing my walks in the mornings, we took trash bags to clean up the trash we found. After a while I noticed I would find exceptional pieces of trash. The ones you look at one time, a second, and a third time!
As a photographer I was intrigued and started to photograph certain pieces. This would be my next series “Ocean Trash”. They will finally make a book “The Ocean Trash Bible”.
After talking to several people about this project, I came in contact with Phillip West, director of Coastal Resources, Orange Beach, Alabama. As he was talking to me about “Leave only footprints”, a beach conservation program. It got me all fired up. I wanted to help out, making the beach a better place for wildlife and visitors and I got a job as a beach ambassador for Coastal resources, Orange beach.
As I was doing this job, Ocean Trash grew and developed in more than photography. Colleagues found special items of trash like wigs and fabric. But also Boogie boards left behind by children, etc… Could this be a way to create something else maybe? Create an ocean trash “persona”? “Jane Trash”?
I will continue doing my photography, give “Jane Trash” a voice and educate through art. I want to get the school system involved, and work on an educational program for children
But to do all this and understand this problem better we need to educate ourselves in order to find answers and stay informed.
A while ago I applied to be a part of this expedition and got selected!

eXXpedition is an all-female sailing voyage and scientific research mission. Over 38,000 nautical miles and 30 voyage legs starting and ending in the United Kingdom, eXXpedition crews will explore plastics and toxics in our ocean, via four of the five oceanic gyres and the Arctic.
Connected by a passion to protect our shared ocean, it will enable 300 women to go to sea as hands-on crew and experience first hand the challenges we face from single-use plastics, while contributing to cutting-edge scientific research and solutions-based thinking.
