RIP Major Mike- Hero Service Dog
We are a community coming together to mourn the loss of a brave military service dog, who deserves the honor to be laid to rest with a military funeral and burial. This soldier was found fatally wounded by his owner and friend Matt Bessler (also a military war veteran) after Matt returned home from a hunting trip. Major Mike is a former military combat dog that had served two tours of duty in Iraq. Please help us fund a funeral that will do this military war veteran the respect he deserves.
Any extra donations will be distributed to a military based program that honors and supports military war veterans.
I have been contacted by gofundme for validation purposes and to make sure that the donors are not being taken advantage of due to the size of this campaign and the national attention of the story. Which is absolutey fine and helps to reassure the purpose of this account.
Here are the questions asked with my answers:
1. Who you are: my name is Jessica Campbell
2. Where you're from: I was born and raised in Frannie, WY. I now reside in Cowley Wy and own and operate a business in Powell,WY. Now these towns are about only 15 minutes apart.
3. Your relationship to the parties you're raising funds for: Matt and Major Mike (more Matt then Mike but Mike was always welcome) both attended and trained at my gym on and off for the the past 1.5-2 years.
4. How the funds will be spent (be specific as possible): the funding will be spent on funeral services, necropsy (animal autopsy), an other support and any other costs that Matt may have in association with the shooting incident and the funeral for Major Mike (military honors, etc.). Any and all left over funds will be donated to an organization for war veterans that Matt works with and will be of his choosing. I will update every one every time there is a change or where the funds are spent.
5. How you intend to get the funds to those in need: I do not have access to the funds. That is why I chose gofundme, these funds will go directly to Matt as needed for use and then to the organizations of Matt's choosing.

First and foremost...I am so sorry for the loss of Major Mike. I would like to offer Matthew a full blooded German Shepherd pup to be trained as a service dog. I have a bitch due to give birth any day now. Four pups have hand picked homes and I was intending to have the remaining pups trained as service dogs and given at no cost to veterans in need. I was planning to keep it local to SW Florida, but Major Mike and Matt's story ripped my heart open. I would be honored to give Matt the pick of the litter, have the pup trained and transported to Matt in Wyoming at no cost to him. Rest free and easy Major Mike...job well done.
I would like to make a donation to help Mike get a new fully trained service dog. Please start a new fundraiser, or make the overage from this fundraiser go to that purpose. I completely agree that Major Mike deserves a heroes funeral, but I want Matt to benefit directly by funding a new best friend for him! Thank you for your consideration. Good Bless Major Mike, Matt and All the troops whether they have two or four legs! Good bless the USA
I am sorry for your loss. Your dog is our loss. When the bell tolls, it tolls for everyone. I hope name of the trigger happy piece of shit that killed your dog is revealed so he can suffer the worst public humiliation possible. If the dog didn't attempt to bite him, there was no reason to shoot. He's just a paranoid old man. Piece of shit.
Our hearts go out to you, Major Mike. Thank you for your service to your country, and to your noble handler and loving owner. We can only learn from the selfless unconditional acts of love and service displayed by these creatures. You were too good for this world, and we will make sure justice is served and you will not be forgotten.
I am so terribly sorry. This is absolutely devastating. There are so many unanswered questions - which answers can't bring him back but why did the guy not at least contact someone when he shot him but left him to die? That alone should count for animal abuse! I am donating for the funeral. It was found the dog was shot in the rear? So Mike was shot to death when he ran away? I hope someone will get to the bottom of this and justice will be served!
I am so terribly sorry for your loss. My heart sank when I read the story. Mike served our country and served you well. I am a dog lover, and firmly believe that our dogs are our family, our kids. The love and bond shared is so strong. Thank you so very much for your service to our Country. May God Bless you, may he hold Mike safely in his arms. May Mike play happily in Heaven until you are reunited there. I will keep you in my prayers.
There are people who are afraid of dogs but that does not give them the right to shoot a pet. Carrying a gun on a bike is extreme and unnecessary when a police department is nearby. Mike looks like a happy soul enjoying his friends and retirement. Our promise is never to forget our combat broth e r who kept us safe.
My heart goes out to Matt, I am so saddened by this story. I wish I could afford to donate something. I am outraged by the actions of the cyclist who shot Major Mike. There are so many parts of his story that make absolutely zero sense. I hope that someday justice (and Karma) are served.
I can't even begin to imagine what the owner is feeling right now. I hope the owner, Mr. Matt Bessler will find the strength to live stronger and braver than he ever has in his life so that he may survive the tragedy that has befallen upon his beloved companion. Mike will forever have a place in his heart, and I hope that he will find the strength he needs from this love. Please survive.
Hello! My name is Katherine Andrews. I train service dogs in So Dakota and was wondering if you were thinking about acquiring another service dog. My website is animalpsychologycenter.com. If you need some help, give me a call!
I am truly sorry for the loss of your best friend, Major Mike. Your story touched my heart. He does deserve military honors and a proper veteran burial. Unfortunely, I am currently unemployed, so I can not donate right now but I wanted to at least comment to you with my condolences. Keep memories of your best friend close to your heart, and you already are honoring him. I wish you peace and love.
After several days of looking at the wituation, it becomes clear that the shooter should be charged for killing Mike. Why? Because he was around his property with other canines. The.,shooter should have kept going but instead he stopped and confronted the group. He says Mike was in full attack mode. Really? Highly trained on command canine who was taking the anxiety relaxant prozac, challenged the shooter. And he says he used bird shot? That right there is false...Mike died. No bite marks any where, shot in the rear, this brave canine died alone as the shooter did not render help. All allegations, but a lawyer is needed now to advocate for Mike. And remember, the shooter could have a history of other killings, abuse, and neighbor - based disturbances. Should this shooter be roaming around with a gun? Looks to many people that he was looking to kill a dog...the intent is there. Why else carry a gun when you can peddle away from trouble. Thus, these allegations need answers and in a court of law.
There must be closure. A war hero who saved lives must be honored respectfully. Civil action is the path. A legal approach is recommended.
