EVFS repairs and operating costs

$13,170 of $50,000 goal

Research at the El Verde Field Station has been temporarily halted by the effects Hurricanes Irma and Maria. While we wait for assistance from Puerto Rican and Federal sources, scientists on the ground in Puerto Rico are supporting the needs of the field station for fuel, materials, repairs, rental vehicles, and replacement equipment from their private funds. Through their efforts, research on the effects of the hurricanes will resume shortly. However, in order to keep the station open, we need to provide support for operating costs. We have set an initial goal of $10,000 to reimburse costs already covered by individuals and to provide a small cushion for emergency purchases during the next few weeks.  These funds are urgently needed to assure the continuity of the work being done at EVFS.

My name is Bob Waide, and I am a currently located at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque. I previously directed the Long Term Ecological Research project based at EVFS and the University of Puerto Rico. I have been asked by Jess Zimmerman, the currect director, to create this GoFundMe account because access to internet and banks is very limited in Puerto Rico. I will transfer funds to Jess using PayPal or wire transfers as the situation permits.

We are extremely grateful for the support shown in helping us achieve our initial goal of $10,000. These funds have been critical in keeping the station operating by providing diesel fuel for the generator, food and water for volunteers, and transportation. Unfortunately, the situation in Puerto Rico is improving so slowly that we have decided that we need to raise our funding goal. Electrical power reached EVFS through a line transecting the forest, but this line and the supporting poles were destroyed by the hurricanes. We do not anticipate that line power will be restored for months or possibly years. In the meantime, we continue our work on the impacts of climate change and disturbance and how these factors affect the forest's ability to provide clean water to the people of Puerto Rico. Please help us keep this important work going by disseminating information about our GoFundMe campaign through your own social networks. Thanks very much.

Thanks to all of you who have supported our campaign. Jess is in the process of ordering more diesel to get the generator running at the field station. This would not be possible without your donations.
