Mav Is A Sick Puppy And Needs Help
Maverick has been in remission from Lymphoma for just over a year now. Yesterday we noticed that he was acting lethargic and his lymph nodes were enlarged. This morning we took him to Deland Animal Hospital, and they confirmed our fears. Maverick's Lymphoma is back.
His blood tests came out great, which means that all of his organs are functioning properly. That makes him a great candidate for a second round of chemo. Maverick tolerated it beautifully the first time around, so we decided to go ahead with round two. His first dose was administered this morning, and we are cautiously optimistic.
Mav will be on the Wisconsin Protocol, which is the same 25 week treatment he was on before. The treatment plan is a weekly dose of chemo for the next few weeks along with daily prednisone. All in total, this plan cost us nearly $7,000 last time. The new vet we are seeing tells us that they are much much cheaper, and that we should see significant savings.
As for his odds.....well, the chances of achieveing a second remission are lower, but because he is in good shape and did so well last time, we're looking pretty good. We can never know how long we will have with him, but he means the world to us, and every healthy day is cherished.
We know how much Maverick means to so many of you, and we hope you know how much he (and we) love you all as well. Any help is appreciated. We most definitely understand if you can only send good vibes his way. He loves those too! Thanks, everyone, I'll keep you updated regularly.
We love you all like Maverick loves tennis balls,
Joey and Allison
Maverick has spent the whole day at the hospital receiving fluids and IV antibiotics. He is slowly improving. We've seen him sitting up more and responding to squeaky toys across the room. He still isn't eating, but we're hopeful that he'll have an appetite soon.
This evening he had an ultrasound done on his bladder as he hadn't produced much urine today. His kidney values were all good earlier, and the ultrasound didn't show a large value of urine, so we were a little confused and concerned. Dr. Deb catheterized him and tested his urine. The results were good so it looks like he was just dehydrated. He did vomit a little once this evening, so they're going to give him some anti-nausea meds that will also help with any general inflammation.
As of now we're still hopeful that this is pneumonia and not a mass in his lung. The only way to know for sure is with an invasive procedure that he is not strong enough to handle right now.
Maverick is going to spend the night in the hospital, and if things continue to improve we should be able to bring him home tomorrow. We're going to go visit him again in a little while and we'll update as soon as we know anything else. Thank you all so much for everything. We can never express to you how much your love and support mean to us.
Maverick loves you, and so do we.
Today has been tough. Mav went to bed last night not feeling well, and we assumed he was just tired because of the dose of chemo he had received on Tuesday. When we woke up today, that turned out to not be the case. Maverick was very lethargic, and wouldn't eat at all, so I rushed him to see Dr. Deb at Deland Animal Hospital.
His initial exam showed a high fever and he was immediately cooled down as they started blood work and testing. Chest x-ray showed what is either a mass or pneumonia in his lungs. We are hoping for pneumonia.
He is currently with his friends at Deland Animal Hospital receiving IV Fluids and Anitbiotics. Our hope is that it is pneumonia and can be treated. With a little luck, the fluids and antibiotics should help battle the infection. We are receiving constant updates from the vet, but we won't really know more until later today as we see how he is progressing.
If you would like to help with what is looking to be a very expensive couple of days in ICU, it would really go a long way towards getting him back on the road to recovery. We cannot thank everyone enough for your constant love and support of the big guy. He needs all of the positive energy in the world right now, and we know you can send it to him. Thank you all so much for loving our boy as much as we do. Maverick loves you.
Maverick is healthy as a horse, other than the obvious problems with his back legs and the cancer. Fortunately, it looks as though the two problems are unrelated, and the cancer has most likely not spread into his spine! Maverick shows no clinical signs of cancer right now which means the chemo is working! After our crisis last week, we had to stop the chemo to allow his body to heal. As of Tuesday, we are back on our chemo protocol, and Maverick received another chemo treatment that same day!
We don't know if his hind legs will ever work again, but we will continue therapy in the wheelchair, and try to keep building his strength and muscle mass. As of now, we are using an older wheelchair that a wonderful friend loaned us. It is working ok, but honestly doesn't fit Mav quite right. You may have noticed that we updated our goal amount. We are hoping to get Mav a new, custom fitted chair soon. They are nearly $1000, so we're going to have to raise a little more.
With his health continuing to improve, we are looking at more long-term care now, including massage and physical therapy. We are doing plenty at home, but would love to be able to have him visit a professional.
We will also most definitely continue our wagon tours of Deland! Looks like our baby (and now Deland's baby) is here to stay.
We cannot tell you how much the outpouring of love and support has meant for us and Maverick. He truly feels like a part of fabric of Deland, and now knows that his family is much much bigger than our little home. Everybody loves Maverick.
If you would like to donate to Mav's long-term care/ chemo/ wheelchair fund, it would mean the world to us. Looks like the big guy is going to need it!
Sorry I'm broke right now as i'm trying to pay for my fathers cremation but, My family and I have been with arni foundation for over 15 years. If you look them up on google and contact them I'm sure they'd do anything and everything they can to help as well.
My friend Angeline Jovan's Bull Mastiff has lymphoma and she is NOT doing chemo etc. Her dog was diagnosed in Feb, and is doing GREAT with Cannabis Oil ! Please contact her. When the Vet saw her dog last month he asked how long has Ms. Ruby been in remission? Please contact her and try this on your dog. It is incredible stuff !
Prayers for sweet Maverick. We have an eight year old golden named Daisy. She has been in remission for three years now from lymphoma. I pray all goes well for your sweet boy. He definitely has parents that love him very much. You can see the look on his face, that he knows that.
I so wish we could donate, but sadly we are struggling financially. Prayers for Mav every day. God Bless everyone who can help this furbaby. Much love and kisses to Mav. ♡♡♡♡♡
I wish we could help but we ourselves have just adopted a shelter dog and right before doing so found out he has cancer. We had fallen in love with him already and even thought the shelter said we didn't have to take him-we had to. If for nothing else just to give him a home where he's loved until his time comes. All we can give you are our prayers.
For a better treatment, give a transfer factor for dog of 4life, it will help you enormously
Love you, beautiful Maverick! Hoping you are well again very soon. Saw this report yesterday, and it looks hopeful! http://www.kgw.com/news/new-medication-a-breakthrough-for-canine-cancer/382669237

Aww that is what happened to my Addison. He had a very ugly cancer. Chemo initially worked but histiocytic sarcoma is very chemo resistant. Having just turned 8 it was very hard to deal with and he way too young. Sadly March 7 he sprung a 105 fever and passed away. Praying for Mav! It's so hard to see them in pain. My heart goes out to you.
