Eve Song Project PDX

Hello and thank you for considering our GoFundMe Campaign: Eve Song Project PDX! I am honored that you are taking the time to read about our project. My name is Jena Viemeister. I’m a professional singer and teacher located in Portland, OR and am one of the creative minds and voices behind this project.

The original song cycle, by living American composer, Jake Heggie and poet Philip Littell, tells the biblical story of Adam and Eve from Eve’s feminist perspective. In our interpretation, we’ve divided the music and poetry up so that there are two characters: Eve and Lilith. Both women will be painted from head to foot by local artist, Claire Brooksbank and filmed by videographer/designer Nick Boxwell. Members of the Inclusive Dance Vibe of Portland will be also be joining us to add interpretive dance. Rebecca Stager is our collaborative pianist and Vakare Petroliunaite will be playing the title character, Eve who throughout the cycle is illuminated to the inequalities she must face as a woman and eventually learns to embrace her power. I will play Lilith, who in many historic texts (**cough cough male written texts cough cough***) portrays her as a demon, the snake that gives Eve the fruit, baby stealer, and occasionally a man eating succubus. More modern interpretations of Lilith include the first feminist and protector of women and infants. (***Hint, we’re going to go with the later of the two interpretations of Lilith….)

The idea of turning the song cycle “Eve-Song” into a film, comes from a place of such urgency to heal this world. So much of what I love seems to be continually threatened on a daily basis, that at times I feel powerless; however, producing Eve Song Project PDX has reminded me that in order to make a positive radical change in ourselves and the world, we must never give up hope and be persistent as hell.

Thanks to the Chicago Academy of the Arts, we are partially funded; however, we are still in need of $3000 more to make this film a reality! Your donations no matter how big or small, will make it possible for us to share our music video with the world. That’s right! We will be posting  to YouTube as soon as we can pay for the license to do so! (That’s where YOU come in!) That means, anyone with internet will have access. Anyone regardless their economic standing will be able to experience classical music in this progressive way.

Again, thank you so much for your time. Your contributions do make a positive difference. Thank you for being the good this world needs!

Sincerely,
Jena Viemeister
