Dear friends, family, and all those who supported Ethan over the past year and a half, we have updated  this site (Oct 2016) to say that Ethan is doing well - he is so happy and full of life. Thank you! We are excited about the book that was written about him called Marley and Maverick find Ethan's Magic legs www.ethansmagicbook.com and the upcoming Book Launch event that all those who care about Ethan are invited to attend and come meet him!!

Ethan is doing so well. It’s been exactly a year since he left Sick Kids Hospital! You were all so generous and supportive through your kind words and donations when Ethan took ill and you followed his four month story at Sick Kids until he went home. Fast forward to today –

If you click on the Updates tab, you can see the video and pictures! He loves to smile and has the most beautiful spirit!

We are thrilled to announce that there has been a book written about Ethan which will raise money for Ethan’s fund and for Sick Kids Hospital. There has also been a song written for him called Superhero which will be sung at the book launch. You are invited to RSVP at info@torontocityevents.com for the book launch which takes place this November 16th in downtown Toronto. It’s a free event where you can meet the guest of honour, Ethan Faria, and his parents Rachel and Humberto. This is a celebration of life, live music, and literary art in support of Ethan’s Magic Book Campaign.

You can order multiple books, and if you don’t want a book you are welcome to also make a donation on the same page www.ethansmagicbook.com.

Updates:
Rachel takes Ethan to Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital four days a week. The professional staff at Bloorview have been working with Ethan since January, and Ethan has made huge strides.

Ethan was first fitted for Prosthetics in April. He took to them quickly; he reacted so well. He has physio 4 mornings a week where he does lots of exercises and learns to walk on his prosthetics along with a walker.

Ethan loves to bounce around and climb. He throws the pillows from the couch on to the carpet to give himself a soft-landing on the floor! Then he climbs all over them. His mobility is amazing despite his challenges!

Ethan has music class at Bloorview twice a week along with speech therapy. Check out his musical talent on the video! He loves animals, and he knows all the animal sounds. He also loves listening to stories and turning the pages in books.

His favourite food right now is French fries. He has become an expert at using his one hand with limited fingers, and as of a few months ago he learned to hold a spoon!

We hope you have enjoyed this update. Please join Ethan, Rachel and Humberto at the book launch on November 16th and enjoy an evening of wine, food, and music. They are so grateful for this opportunity to meet those who have supported them and thank them in person. And remember to order a book online to support Ethan and Sick Kids Hospital.

Here is a bit of the original intro in the summer of 2015:.
On July 24th, Ethan Faria, the 14 month old son of Rachel and Humberto Faria, was admitted to the ICU at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto after a brief fever and mild cough. Rachel was told to "prepare for the worst". No one had any idea that this would become a life threatening situation. In a matter of hours, what seemed like something minor turned into a parent’s worst nightmare. Fortunately, Ethan survived the first crucial six hours

Ethan contracted a rare bacterium, Haemophilus influenzae type B (Hib), which rapidly leads to skin necrosis and disseminated intravascular coagulation. Within 12 hours Ethan's life changed forever. He lost part of both legs, his right hand, and part of his left.

This post was written by Rachel: Hi everyone, I decided to write and tell you about Ethan's progress. It's been quite the journey, but now we are able to talk about it, and most of all educate all that stare out of curiosity and just don't know what to say when they meet Ethan. The bacteria that Ethan had is like a 3rd degree burn. He has scars on his arms and legs which are moisturized every day.

I read this the other day and thought of my son.
It's called "Owning Our Scars" -

All scars are beautiful in his eyes,
Because scars speak of pain, yes,
And scars speak of brokenness
But also of survival and triumph
Written by Teryn O'Brien

My son has come back to us. His smile still lights up a room, and when people see him for the first time, they are shocked, but when he bats his eyelashes and smiles, they smile right back.

Our days have been filled with daily visits to the rehab centre where he is getting OT therapy , PT therapy and speech. He's really starting to gain his strength back and could butt crawl across any room. He likes to draw on his magnadoodle, play with building blocks, and especially his ball, and his farm full of animals (especially horses!).

Words cannot express how thankful we are to each and every one of you, for your generous contribution to the GoFundMe page. It is truly incredible to see how your contribution has made a direct impact in Ethan's quality of life.

He has been fitted for liners (we call them magic socks) they are what goes under the prosthetic. These are worn every day for approx 1 hour or until he lets us know he's had enough. Next week is his casting for his prosthetic legs. (Which we call magic legs, of course)

Once again, we thank you for all your support

$50k may not be enough to cover all the costs, I know it's a great start for this family but I'm hoping to reach out to the family about applying for added help from Presidents Choice Children's charity. I work for Loblaws and have seen them help families buy equipment like wheelchairs, mobile vans, or make necessary home renos to make quality of life easier. I was unable to copy the link but if you google Presidents Choice Childrens charity application form the family can seek additional help. I hope this helps!

My father just passed away. He was rushed into the hospital 6 months ago, diagnosed with A Staph Infection, and Discitis, an infection of the spine. He never left the hospital the whole time. He finally got to Toronto Rehab, paralyzed from a hematoma at the base of his spine. He was in Critical care a total of 5 times. 5 surgeries, just an insanely scary struggle, 4 days after getting into Toronto Rehab from Sunnybrook, He was rushed back into sunnybrook Emergency in Septic Shock. Days after, he passed away. What this amazing Boy, and his family is going through is absolutely horrendous. I feel for you all so much, NO ONE ever deserves to go through this, especially an amazing boy like yours, at such a young age. I'm donating this in Memory of my father. While your families battle is far from over, just know that it will get better. He is over the worst now! I wish I could do more to help!!
