Erik Axelsson, a leading member of the MSU Nordic Ski Team was in a bike accident this summer just before starting school. In the accident Erik broke his back and is now paralyzed from the chest down. Overnight his life radically changed and he was faced with a new reality. Instead of retuning to MSU and another season of skiing, he is in a rehabilitation hospital near his home in Sweden. In addition to the daunting project of recovery and mastering basic life functions, his future is now on a completely different trajectory. To a remarkable degree, Erik has been taking these challenges in stride.
At his time at MSU he led the team to some of their most successful seasons in history, served as a positive a role model, and an awesome teammate. Everyone who has met Erik knows how enthusiastic and positive he is. This attitude has not changed from the crash. He is still joking around, and excited to see where his ambitions might take him. He has already expressed his interest in continuing with sports and staying as active as possible.
Along with adapting to his new lifestyle there are many expenses that come with improving his quality of life and facilitating his ability to continue maintaining a healthy, active lifestyle. His family is beginning construction on a wheelchair accessible apartment next to their home, and starting the complex process of figuring out what athletic equipment will be best for Erik in the immediate future to continue doing the things he loves. One of the goals of this campaign is to help buy Erik a racing hand cycle. These chairs cost roughly $5,000 and would allow him to continue racing and competing in sports on the Para circuit.
We all live in the knowledge that at any moment, a catastrophe or illness can lay us low, even in our prime. Our friend and teammate Erik Axelsson has just lived through such a life-changing event. Whatever you feel able to give toward his future ambitions will be deeply appreciated.
