The New Eratap Women's House
Eratap Village is located near Port Vila, Vanuatu. Dawna Horton is a US Peace Corps volunteer stationed there, and along with the women of the village, they are working to improve the lives of women and children. For the past two years they have developed an English literacy program that engages the family as a whole. Ni-Vanuatu Women teach other local women how to use games, songs, poems, drama, and other activities to help these women and their families learn English.
As the program continues to grow, so does the need for classroom space and a community library. The buildings they are using have been badly damaged by Cyclone Pam (a category 5 cyclone) and in bad weather the women must huddle to keep dry. Even so, they are determined to continue. Their resolve is an inspiration to their children, their families, and their community. They have even begun to see positive effects in their children's attitudes towards academics, and the way the men in their lives support them.
The women in the program are now setting goals for themselves beyond their stereotypes. In this new space, our participants and our community will expand their knowledge base, engage in meaningful exchanges of ideas, and encourage each other regardless of the status quo in order to find their own unique voice.
Any amount raised will be 100% used for building supplies and labor to complete the building. The money raised in this campaign will have an impact on our participants in our community for years to come. Thank you for your support!
