Erase CMS School Lunch Debt

Inspired by a story on the Today show, The 2007 Phillip O. Berry Academy Alumni launched a campaign to pay off student lunch debts in Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools starting with the top 10 schools carrying the most unpaid lunch debt. This begun with the idea of paying off the high school debt the alumni graduated from in 2007. These top 10 schools carry a negative balance of $52,000.
Many kids arrive at school without a lunch and without money to buy one. When the cafeteria gives them a meal, they rack up a deficit. Some parents are not able to afford a forty cents to a two dollar lunch meal. Wouldn't it be a great gift to Charlotte families and schools to find their outstanding balance with the school district food service erased for the start of the year? It's one small, but meaningful, thing we can do for our kids today. Some seniors may be unable to graduate for carrying outstanding lunch balances in 2017, now we can't let something like this happen? Negative balances also effect new programs, sports, infrastructure, supplies etc. from being funded to schools as well.
The total negative balance for the CMS school system is roughly $219,000 dollars, any money raised is helpful, however if we can find a way to resolve the entire matter would be a blessing. We can sit around and wait for these politicians forever or we can take matters into our own hands. Let's be the change and set extraordinary examples for our youth in the Charlotte community.
