Equestrian Skills Course

Friends of the Equestrian Skills Course, a 501c3 organization, promotes the education of equestrians and other trail users by developing and maintaining a public equestrian skills course.

The Equestrian Skills Course is located in Bear Creek Regional Park, Colorado Springs, Colo. It is a 15-acre trail obstacle course for horses and riders of all levels. Each obstacle set features at least three elements with easy, intermediate and difficult levels. The course provides a dedicated area for horses and riders to practice their skills for use on the trail. Being located in this regional park also allows riders to expose their horses to hikers, bikers, runners and dog walkers. As a bonus, it allows us to share horses with those who might not ordinarily encounter horses. We are also focused on educating equestrians and other trail users how to interact properly on the trails. This is the only equestrian skills course of its kind that is free and open to the public in the country.

With the county parks having severely limited funds, we formed our group to bring this concept to reality. Our group is reponsible for designing the course, raising funds to build the course, construct the course and then maintain the course.

This will be an incredible asset for equestrians in our area and those visiting from other areas. As horses tend to get pushed further and further away from urban areas, this course helps expose people to horses and helps build relations between equestrians and our community.

We have almost completed our pond obstacle area and are seeking funds to build connecting paths ($1,300) our step obstacle area ($3,300 remaining). We have received two grants for the steps, but our costs increased when we had to move one set of steps due to erosion in the area. We also are in need of general funding to help cover costs of educational signage, insurance, and operating costs of our all-volunteer organization. Any additional funds will go toward future obstacle areas, including bridges, gates, log crossings and stream crossings to name a few.

We appreciate anything you can give to help us out. If you'd like to join us to volunteer, please contact us. We LOVE our donors and volunteers and cannot complete this project without you! Please visit us on Facebook or our website.
