Equal Pay for girls in sport

$2,000 of $5,000 goal

Like many other people out there, this photo has really pissed me off. There is absolutely no reason why this young talented woman, Zoe Steyn, should receive a winners prize cheque that is less than her male counterpart. 5 years ago, when I was working for Australia Post, the prize pool for the Stawell Gift (Australia’s richest foot race) was $60K for the men versus $6k for the women. As the major sponsor of the event we demanded change. As a result Australia Post now sponsors the women’s race so that it is equal to the men’s race - $60k prize pool. Surprise surprise the number of entries in the women’s race has now significantly increased!

Unfortunately I don’t work for Billabong so I can’t influence such change in the same way. But... where there is will there’s a way.

Let's raise the AU$400 and send it to Zoe Steyn to make sure she feels just as worthy as her male peer. But I reckonwe’ll raise heaps more than that so whatever we raise above $400 we'll donate to the amazing Layne Beachley Foundation.

This foundation is committed to helping women succeed by providing financial and mentoring support for them to reach the next level. But most importantly, they help women build the confidence and self-belief they need to take that step.

Come on sisters and brothers- let’s show this world how important gender equality is!!

I’ll kick off with a personal $50au donation.

(FYI I have no personal or professional connection to the Layne Beachley Foundation.... I just love what they are about. I haven’t even informed them of this)!

Hi everyone,

Thank you so much for supporting the Zoe Steyn equal pay gofundme campaign. Within just a few hours of launching the campaign we raised the $400 aus (4000 rand) to ensure equal prize money for Zoe proving that people not only care but are willing to take action against gender inequality. Once we exceeded the $400 goal we decided that any additional money we would donate to the Layne Beachley Foundation. Thanks to each and every one of you, the gofundme page now sits at $1000!!

It took me a few days but I was eventually able to make contact with Zoe. She was so grateful for what we have done for her and she asked if, rather than send her the money, would we donate her $400 to her local surf charity who are focused on getting kids off the street and into surfing - I love this young woman even more now!! Having shared this response with the Layne Beachley Foundation they suggested we split the money between charities evenly and donate $500 to Zoe’s chosen charity.

So, I’m delighted to inform you that your very kind donation has not only helped us raise awareness about gender equality (see some of the news links below) you have also helped support two very worthy charities.

Thank you so much.

Warm regards,

Lauren Jauncey
