Equal Access to Deaf Education

Donation protected
Only 0.02% of Deaf people ever make it to higher education in Mexico, which is due to the many obstacles they face in society like not having access to education in their native language Lengua de Señas Mexicanas (Spanish for Mexican Sign Language). This is just one of the many social issues the Mexican Deaf community faces, but they are a resilient and strong community valuing relationships and communication above all.

Being part of Deaf culture (my parents are Deaf) has made me a natural ally for the Deaf community and I am really passionate about the social justice issues that they face. A GED program opened up a classroom at their school (ITECI) and allowed an all Deaf class with a Deaf teacher native in LSM. Finally,  last year the first all Deaf high school level group graduated here in Ensenada, Baja California. However, this is not free for them. The students have to pay the program a monthly fee to use the facilities and their curriculum, and they pay the teacher monthly since he is also offering a service.

Nowadays, I am currently working with the second generation of High school level students, and I can tell that they are struggling to get by with the payments, and I don't think that is fair.  They should have the right to receive and education in their language and not have to fear of not making a payment. This group is set to graduate in August! Each student pays a 1000 pesos a month which roughly equals to $60.00 dollars a month. This might not seem a lot to you, but when your weekly minimum salary in Mexico is about $70.00 dollars, then it's a lot!

I want them to finish strong!
I want them to graduate!
I want them to have the opportunity  to go to college if they want to!
I want them to see all their hard work pay off despite continual struggles!
To lift one of the many obstacles they face!
AND
I want you to be a part of this too, because I can't do this alone.
