Fund for Eoin
Gary Sloan has been a stalwart of the Irish underground music scene for as long as I can remember, and I was horrified to hear the very sad news about the medical diagnosis his young son, Eoin has received. I was already taking part in the Great Ireland Run 10k and thought it right to try and raise something to help his family. Given it was only two days before the event, I expected to raise a couple of hundred, which would have brilliant. However, an astonishing €3,500 was raised by the Sunday night. Fair play to you all.
Seeing as people are still keen to donate after the race, I've retitled it as simply the 'Fund for Eoin', and will leave it going.
See the message from Gary and Avril below:
Eoin was diagnosed with MLD (Metachromatic Leukodystrophy) in October 2016. Prior to this Eoin was a very active little boy who loved running, climbing and playing. Following this devastating diagnosis Eoins condition has deteriorated rapidly and Eoin relies on a wheelchair and requires full assistance for all his needs. This life limiting condition unfortunately is incurable and Eoin will need us more and more as time passes.
It has been the hardest and most soul destroying news for all of us and we know that as MLD progresses it will rob our son of his speech, sight and hearing.
Please help us by raising funds to help us ensure that Eoin can have his care needs met and allow us to have time with him to enjoy each precious moment
Avril & Gary (Eoin’s Mum and Dad)
This is only a short term campaign, there is a larger scale one being organised for the Women's Mini Marathon in June, see here for more:
I've not updated here before, but I thought I should, even just to thank everyone. So thank you.
I just wanted to let everyone know that the money you all kindly donated helped us get work done to the house so Eoin can be comfortable, and allow him to have his own shower room so we can bathe him. He is delighted with this as he loves bath time.
We also got a wheelchair accessible car and this has again helped Eoin be more comfortable and allow us more freedom getting around.
I was going to close the gofundme but as people have continued with donations I thought of just leave it open.
Just know,Eoin is happy, and he smiles every day.
I don't know what else to say,so ill just say thank you.
The crowds were huge on the day, but Gary managed to find me before the start and expressed how grateful and thankful to everyone he and Avril are. I was hoping to raise one or two hundred euro, but as I type the counter on the right is hovering just below €3,490.
Which is astonishing...
Thanks to you all, I hope it helps the family in some small way. Gary said that even knowing people care and are thinking of them means the world.
As an aside, when I caught up with Gary, I was actually in the toilet queue, and missed out on my important "business", which meant I did a personal best on the course to get to the jacks at the other end!
There will be more events, starting with the Mini Marathon in Dublin https://www.facebook.com/events/1176435295815302/?acontext=%7B%22ref%22%3A%223%22%2C%22ref_newsfeed_story_type%22%3A%22regular%22%2C%22action_history%22%3A%22null%22%7D
and this gig in Belfast https://thumped.com/bbs/threads/for-the-fallen-fest-may-2017.99114/
But from me, thanks 8)
His dad, Gary, some of you may know from bands like The Kabinboy and Knifed. He and his wife Avril received a devastating medical diagnosis for Eoin and a full on fund raising campaign has been started for the Women's Mini Marathon in June, but seeing as I won't be doing that....
If you can give something, that'd be brilliant, and I promise to try and get around the course in less than 6 hours.....
