Raised by 23 people in 3 months
Blair High School's International Human Rights class is raising funds to bring Emmanuel Jal to perform for and work with our students at the end of February 2017.  Jal is a former child soldier from South Sudan.  Through unimaginable struggles, he managed to survive and go on to emerge as a recording artist, achieving worldwide acclaim for his unique style of hip hop with its message of peace and reconciliation borne out of his personal experiences.  Jal is currently touring schools around the world to share music and his story in a quest to engage and empower young people as they become active global citizens.  Check out Jal's song "We Want Peace" and help us bring him to our school.    Questions?  Contact Anne Manuel (International Human Rights teacher).

Many, many thanks to everyone who contributed to this campaign. Emmanuel Jal spent all day at Blair High School on Feb. 21. None of us will ever forget it. Here are a sampling of student and staff reactions: From the head of the English department, who has been teaching for decades: “What an amazing presentation. In all of my years of teaching, I have never seen such a captivated student audience. That man's spirit is tremendous, and his inspirational message resonated with everyone in that room. … I, myself, am transformed because of the experience.” A sampling of student comments: “ I was amazed by the amount of joy that Emmanuel Jal was able to exude, even having been through such traumatic experiences. I found his story to be very moving and what hit me the most was how he described at the workshop his approach to life, and how he would not leave the house in the morning without being a 10 out of 10 for joy and happiness. It makes you think about how, if a man who has lived through being a child soldier is able to wake up every day with such an enthusiasm for life, then we should be able to, too. “ “I didn’t know how to react when I first saw him. I wanted to jump up and down but I couldn’t because a lot of people were there and it would be embarrassing. I had to contain myself from freaking out. The moment he asked me to dance it was a dream come true.” “I was very excited and he surpassed all of my expectations. Instead of it being a sad show it was very happy and inspiring which I felt was amazing. I especially thought his answers to the questions at the end were extremely well thought out and very honest. I am very glad I got to have this experience, I will never forget it.” “It was honestly one of the best days of my life, I got to see one of my greatest inspirations and then I got to meet him and take pictures with him!!!!! Then I got his signature and we talked for a bit after and life has honestly been perfect and amazing ever since.” “Honestly, the suffering he’s experienced in his life is incomprehensible. Especially as he’s one of the most free-spirited people I’ve ever met, I’m still trying to wrap my head around the extreme jump in his quality of life. I’m so thankful to have heard his story, which serves as a reminder of human endurance. Not just physically, but spiritually as well. What an awesome person!” “The most profound thing about his story to me is how happy he is today. The second being how he tried to relate his experiences to our own problems, petty as they may be. His story made our stress about school, life, drama, etc., seem infinitely insignificant but he spoke of them, and the importance of our overcoming them, as if they weren’t. Seeing someone whose life and soul was torn apart by war, with so much hope, faith, and compassion on that stage was really an eye-opening experience for all of us.” “The performance teaches me the horror and pain some people in the world have to go through, and it teaches me not to take my life for granted. After this performance, I feel more inspired to help the poor, disabled, or anyone of that kind. I realize that many people are struggling to survive, and do not have many opportunities to go to school or make a living. In some darkest moments of my life, I have even thought about killing myself, but after this performance, I realize that I am lucky to have the life I live.” “Seeing Emmanuel Jal was fantastic! He was a great performer and he was very good at public speaking. I really like how he tied his music and rap into his life story. He talked about his up and downs in life and how he learned his life lessons. Which was great and the way he learned his life lessons and found his reason for living. All around a very inspirational guy who always looks for the best in life!! P.S. he said that knowledge was the key to life and I just used that on a summer opportunities application!” “I was really moved by the entire experience. The fact that he had been through probably the hardest things that anyone could imagine and that he could still share so much insight, positivity, and wisdom with us. The workshop was amazing and I’m currently applying all his advice today.” “It was so exciting and inspirational to see Emmanuel Jal. Last Tuesday is totally one of the best school days of my life. When the video was playing and Jal crept into the aisles, I could not believe it. Everything he had to say about his experience was hard to hear, and amazing for him to tell. He has gained such deep insight about life and how to live it from his experiences.” “I found it to be incredibly inspirational. I really enjoyed the way he spoke so passionately about the issues he faced. It was really cool how interactive the whole thing was, it was super engaging and he got everyone out of their seats and onto the stage. The stories were amazingly haunting, I’ll probably remember them for as long as I live. I loved the life lessons about
