Emma’s Story
Emma was diagnosed with a congenital diaphragmatic hernia at our 12 week ultrasound appointment. The news was heartbreaking and we were terrified. Her defect was one of the most severe the doctors in Seattle had seen and they gave us little hope that she would survive. The idea of terminating the pregnancy never felt right but there were limited facilities that had proven cases of saving babies with Emma’s size of defect. During our first consultation with the Colorado Fetal Care Center things felt different. After several appointments and flying back and forth between Denver and Seattle, we decided that their expertise was the best in the country and it gave us the confidence to move back to Denver to give our baby girl a chance at life. Kelly spent 6 weeks on bedrest at Children’s Hospital with placenta previa and preeclampsia but kept her spirits high through the frequent visits from her doctors and nurses. On May 29,
2018, Emma was born! She was immediately placed on ECMO, intubated, and had 17 pumps of various medications keeping her alive. The next day Dr. Liechty did her repair and two hours later Emma coded. It was the scariest 24 hours but Emma survived and continue to fight. Over the next 5 months, Emma’s lungs grew and she was was able to come home! Our time in the NICU was challenging but the doctors, nurses, therapists, and staff made our days brighter and decisions easier.
We won’t ever be able to repay the team at CHCO or say “thank you” enough but we hope to help future CDH babies with the money we raise as we celebrate her 1st Birthday!!
