Emergency Medical Fund for Thomas
See that basketball size lump on Thomas's back? It looks worse on the inside because it is as big and vascular wrapping it's way around his saccrum. This is what a cell tumor looks like, and it is one in millions of chance that it happened to him. This started back in 2010 and by 2012 he could not walk and it had grown many, many centimeters. He started treatment at MD Anderson on a recommendation from his oncologist who said that there may be a Doctor working with a trial chemo infusion that may help him. We had to wait 9 months for this to happen because his $$$$ and insurance ran out as we waited for Medicare to happen. But, help he did and with-in a year he was walking and not in as much pain. he continued on with this treatment up until May 2017 when he started having alot of problems with his teeth breaking off and causing abcess. There is a side effect called Osteonecrosis of the Jaw (ONJ) from taking this drug that helped him and if it happens they have to cut parts of the jaw out by taking bone from the leg to rebuild. He had to wait 60 days to have them start work on his jaw because of the medication so he stopped it at the end of May this year. Last week he had MRI and tests done only for his new Oncologist to tell him he had run his course with the drug and that it no longer works in his favor. He said he wanted him to meet with a radiation oncologist and that this may be a last course/chance of any treatments for him. The radiation oncologists met with us and explained it would be very radical for 6 weeks , 5 days a week (4 hours at a time) She said " it is going to be very expensive out of pocket" This we understand as every month is a struggle already.. yesterday he had work started on having some teeth removed and has upcoming 4 more. That is also out of pocket .Thank God that it had not turned to ONJ but he still has to have the surgeries to fix the absess. The $$$ keep adding up. Today she called and said that the Tumor Board is not even sure if this will work. Because of the size and rarity no one is really sure what to do. He already had some embolismn surgeries to cut the blood supply and the fear now without treatment is that any new cells will start up again and start attacking the lungs..or organs. And then she asked again (as she did 2 days ago) Can you get to Houston ?? She wants him to see The Tumor Board at the hospital down there. To let them see in person and not just the scans. And once again that would be out of pocket. I know this is exhausting but Thomas sleeps 2-3 hours at a time because he can no longer sleep except for one position. This is a very unfair and painful journey he has been on. He never smoked, drank, and worked the same job for 23 years until this happened. I have been crying about doing this as people have been so kind to us through the years. The Doctor said I should do it- 2 of my best friends said I should do it and my heart says to try.If you can't help I completly understand as people have it tough all over.I just think Thomas deserves a chance as he has faught this so hard. This money will help with any out of pocket costs that have and will continue to incur, including car upkeep, gas, travel, etc. ( we are already about $25,000 in the red as this illness is very expensive. If you can't help just please keep him in prayer. Thank you for reading and God Bless <3
