WHO: My name is Hoda Hassan and I am a member of the Somali Political Action Group (SPAG ) of Columbus, Ohio.
We are a group of individuals committed to educating the Somali community in Ohio about voter registration and local politics. Upon learning about the horrible famine and drought affecting Somalia, we felt we had to do something to provide assistance to those in need.
WHAT: Due to the 2015-2016 El Niño phenomenon, rainfall has been scant and the drought that was already present in Somalia worsened. This has severely affected crop and vegetation and led to a widespread famine, particularly in the northern region. As a result, food prices have increased substantially, making it impossible in many cases for people to afford.

The famine has hit children especially hard. According to the UN, approximately 100 children die every day from starvation. The situation is exacerbated by the ongoing war. Currently, there are an estimated 4.7 million people requiring support due to these conditions.
HOW: So, how can we help? SPAG has decided to fundraise as much as we can to assist as many people as possible. We are partnering with Read Horn of Africa, a 501(C)(3) non-profit organization that supports access to education, water, and basic health in the Horn of Africa based in the US and the UK.
They have previously worked with groups in Minnesota to raise money for Somalia quickly and efficiently. The money raised from this fundraiser will be used to provide water and dry foods (rice, flour, oil and other staple foods). Water will be distributed via tanks and taken to those areas that are most in need.

How can you help? By donating what you can to help those who need it most. The Somali culture is known for its hospitality and graciousness and we hope that everyone, Somali and non-Somali, can give what they can. Every donation counts and will directly help someone.
We want to thank you for taking the time to read and we hope you can join our efforts! Together, we can mend this.
