Many of you have learned that legendary horseman Rick Skelly passed away peacefully at his home in Janesville, Wisconsin on 6/13/17 at 10:25 a.m. after suffering from longterm health issues. The past several years have been very challenging at the Skelly Ranch when Rick was forced into retirement as he was no longer physically able to ride. Rick was never a complainer, so many did not know the struggles he faced having to sit on the sidelines after a lifetime of training and showing horses. It was his passion.
Today, I ask for your help for his longtime partner in life, and business, Ellen Jost. True to her dairy farming roots, she has perhaps the most incredible work ethic and compassion for animals, friends and family of anyone I know. Not only has she kept the ranch afloat the last few years through their breeding operation, and braiding, but she also never wavered on her promise to care for Rick full time in their home.
Ellen is not one to ever ask for anything from anyone, but today, I respectfully ask their mutual friends and colleagues in the horse community to rally and help Ellen with the overwhelming expenses that she has faced, and is incurring with Rick's longtime medical care, funeral expenses, and maintaining operations at their beloved farm.
Those who know Ellen would agree that she would be upset to learn that I am even asking for your help. Ellen has a great deal of pride, and does not easily accept anything from anyone. In her time of grief and need, I hope that you will join my family in giving what you can to help her navigate this very difficult time ahead. No amount is too small.
At some point in time in the future, Ellen hopes to plan a celebration of Rick's life for those who are able to attend. Right now, she has a very difficult road ahead. Blessings to all of you, and please keep Ellen in your prayers.
