Elinor Hawkins Telestory Time bear

In 1952 Elinor D. Hawkins started " Telestory Time" at WFMY - Ch.2 in Greensboro, NC. It was the first television show of it's kind in the state. In 1963, the show was moved to what is now WCTI - Ch.12 in New Bern, NC. At 55 years it is now the  longest running children's TV show in the world, AND Mrs. Elinor, the "Story Lady" is still filming her show at 91!

Mrs. Elinor is also responsible for the creation of 8 libraries in Eastern NC, helped create the Craven Literacy Council, started the Hospital Library, and was a librarian for 42 years. Books and reading have been her passion for all of her life. She also has a large collection of "The Night Before Christmas" books that exceeds 1,000 copies!

She has been awarded The Order of the Longleaf Pine by the state of NC - the highest honor the state can bestow. She was awarded the William Booth Award from the Salvation Army for over40 years of Civic Service. The New Bern, NC library has the Elinor D. Hawkins Children's Room named in her honor.

Her pioneer spirit and motto of "Never Give Up" has helped her to enrich the lives of thousands of children whether it was through Telestory Time, or making books available through the variety of library services that she helped create. Long before there was Mr. Roger's on PBS, there was "The Story Lady".

She has also been featured in TV Guide.

Please help us honor this wonderful woman with your donation for a New Bern Bear.
