What are we doing?

As a part of a community-oriented art project, we are creating a mini, mobile library that will reside in El Chico Bakery on Cherokee Street. You can read more about the art initiative, Counterpublic, in ArtNews HERE.

Why?

In recognition of the lack of access to Latinx literature for the rapidly growing Latinx populations in St. Louis, the library will consist entirely of literature that is written by and about Latinxs, their lives, and experiences. El Chico bakery has been a staple of the Cherokee Street neighborhood and served St. Louis Latinxs for over twenty years. We aim to provide easy access to the wealth of knowledge and art available within our own communities by placing the library within this established, high-traffic community hub.

Who are we?

We are José Guadalupe Garza and Miriam Ruiz, two local chicanx artists. Our collaborative art projects focus upon Latinx identity in the United States as well as our communities within St. Louis.

How can you help?

We are taking donations to purchase around 100 books for our library. We have a growing list of titles and authors that we want to include, but are also open to suggestions. In the event that there are additional proceeds that are not used to purchase books, they will be donated to a Latinx charitable cause.

Have a title that you think we should include?

Let us know!

Have a title that you would like to donate?

We’ll take any and all donated books as long as they are written by and/or about the Latinx experience.
