Donation protected
Bright lights, loud music, crowded dance floors, sounds like a typical high school dance, doesn’t it? Although this might appeal to most students, this does not sound like a “night to remember” for a student with autism or other sensory sensitive attributes. Autism is defined as “a serious developmental disorder that impairs the ability to communicate and interact.” Autism can also affect an individual's way of reacting to loud sounds, bright or flashing lights, and rooms filled with too many people. Things that may be common to other students, may be utterly overwhelming to a student with autism. Although high school is predominantly the same for every student at Edison High School, the only difference is the dances offered. My name is Danielle Brown and I will be holding a “Silent Dance” at Edison High School December 15th, 2017 to accommodate our fellow students with autism. A “silent dance” is basically a dance without loud sounds flashing lights, and instead encompasses dimmed lighting and music provided through wireless bluetooth headphones. This enables an overall quiet environment and an exciting night for sensory-sensitive students.By donating to this event, you will be funding the purchases of the head phones for the students, supplies to offer sensory activity booths, drinks and snacks, and other decorations. I plan to donate everything used here to the school afterwards to keep the “Silent Dances” going after graduation.Thank you all so so much for your time and remember, every little bit helps!! I hope you all have a wonderful night and I can’t wait to be a part of a sensory friendly dance!! :)
