Kristen and Avery Recovery Fund
On a cold and dark Sunday night a mother and daughter in southwest Manitoba slid off the road, tumbled and rolled down a huge embankment into the ditch below. The temperature was approaching the mid -20s. In the darkness, mom crawls to her daughter and covers her with her body to keep her warm as they wait for help.
Help doesn’t come. Cars go by on the road above but no one is coming to save them. It is now morning, the sun is up and mom and daughter have spent the night exposed to the elements, injured, dehydrated and traumatized.
Kristen Hiebert, with two broken arms, a broken neck, broken ribs, and a broken leg began to crawl towards the road. Kristen had to fight back the extreme pain that came with every single movement she made. She kept going, as more and more cars whizzed by on the road above her and her daughter Avery, 4 years of age cried for her from below. She kept going and finally after what seemed like forever of excruciating pain and crawling she reached the side of the road.
A passerby stopped and mother and daughter were taken to hospital. Kristen was airlifted to a large centre and is going through multiple surgeries. Avery, is reported to be in stable condition with no broken bones but further information is unavailable at this time.
The physical and mental recovery from this accident is going to be long and filled with challenges. As a community, fellow parents, single parents or just compassionate individuals, I believe we should step up and help Kristen and Avery in their recovery process.
Kristen Hiebert is a truly genuine hero who scaled an embankment to save her daughter even while suffering with a broken neck, broken arms, broken ribs and a broken leg.
I am honoured and proud to have Kristen as a friend.
Thank you for taking the time to read this.
I would like to apologize for the delay in getting updates out to you the gofundme donors. Kristen and her family had a moment where it all became too much. They were overwhelmed and unable to decide what would be the right thing to do. They thought the attention and the media was undeserved. After a lot of discussion it was decided to release an update with all the latest information.
Last Wednesday it was decided that the frostbite on Kristen’s feet was too severe. Kristen had both feet amputated above the ankle. There were and are many emotions that overwhelm the family, but the support shown by all of you kept them strong.
Kristen continues to heal and her right hand frostbite is improving daily. Kristen is able to use her left arm, lifting and swinging it for control; even though it was recently implanted with a plate. She is quite amazing. Her feeding tube will be removed soon, but her biggest irritant is the neck brace she has to wear constantly for the next while.
Her pain continues to be managed by the fabulous staff that is caring for her as well as the family that is giving her back and head scratches to alleviate her discomfort.
Avery is doing wonderful, is discharged from hospital, walking on her foot and spending time with Kristen’s mom Karen.
Kristen is overcome with emotion by all of the love shown towards her and her family. She sends her sincerest gratitude to everyone who has donated, sent kind thoughts, words and prayers. She is in awe of your compassion. You have made their ability to recover achievable. Thank you, from the bottom of all our hearts, thank you.
My visit with Kristen was wonderful although it felt too short. She continues to be in great pain due to her injuries, but the staff is wonderful and family is always near to support her. Kristen has two stitches above her left eye, has had a plate implanted in both her upper arms, and surgery to stabilize her right wrist. Her right hand suffered from frost bite, but is healing well. Kristen's legs are wrapped from the knee down and they are continuing to monitor blood flow. Avery's left foot is bandaged and she will stay in hospital until she able is do all the fun things that little girls do.
Kristen's journey of recovery has just begun. It is one that will require great strength and courage. Their is family that is by Kristen's side caring for her and Avery diligently. Their compassion and selflessness is humbling.
Numerous people were and continue to be affected by Kristen and Avery's story.
I would like to honour the first responders to the accident. I can't imagine the terrible sights that you saw and instant heartbreak that overcame you. Please take time to take care of yourself and remember that you too experienced a traumatic event.
We can also report that Kristen fortunately doesn’t have any fractures below her waste.
Unfortunately, while she was keeping Avery warm during that cold night her legs were exposed to the cold. If body tissues are exposed to extreme cold, injury can result known as frostbite. Further tests are being done to determine the extent of Kristen’s injuries as a result of frostbite on her feet and one leg.
Avery is still in hospital and we have no further updates at this time.
To everyone who has donated; your generosity and kindness is humbling. Kristen expressed tearful disbelief at the outpouring of support.
Thank you for helping make Kristen and Avery's journey of recovery possible.
Ima McGee you're horrible! I'm not sure what on earth prompted you to post this on the Gofundme wall of a mother and daughter that almost lost their lives this week, but I am sure it didn't come from good intentions. My daughter -Kirsten's cousin, was also in a nearly fatal car accident two years ago. She still hasn't received any insurance funds. And before you decide with all your judgmental wisdom that it was her fault, it wasn't. Kristen will have many needs over the next little while and perhaps for the rest of her life. The long term fallout of this incident are unknown by any of us. Including you!!!!! So, please mind your own business and let those of us who care about Kristen and Avery do what we can to help them. We want to. You on the other hand clearly don't so please shut your horrible mouth and rather than spew your ignorant opinions on this subject perhaps you could do something useful today with your time...perhaps get out a dictionary and look up the word empathy or enroll in charm school. OR if you can't find the energy maybe you could start your own Gofundme page for the new, kinder heart that you obviously are in desperate need of! Please don't post on this page again. It's for Kristen and Avery, not your filthy mouth!
Ima McGee people donate towards whatever they deem worthy. Over a hundred people have deemed it worthy. What she chooses to do with it is up to her. As I am sure you are aware MPI can be awful to deal with and money can be difficult to get from them especially when its needed right away. Have some compassion.
There are so many RIGHT reasons and very few, if any, wrong reasons for helping a fellow human who has found themselves in a terrible situation with immediate costs that need covering (rent utilities etc) yes in this case there is autopac but there is also a community who cares that knows these insurance payments are not expedited. With no fault insurance what exactly will Be covered and paid out? Think about it, I don't know either for certain. While in hospital enduring surgeries life goes on on the outside and life comes with costs. Forms need to be filed out claims filed process ensues. It all takes time and do adjusters come to hospital to expedite things? Not sure on that either but NOT KNOWING ALL THE ANSWERS I am hardly qualified to criticize the victim. Why add the worry to those involved of the insurmountable debt piles when they should be focused on healing? If a person has detailed questions or for whatever reason, a complaint about an initiative of kindness and elevating a bit of worry for the victim during a difficult time ... Please message the creator of the fundraiser directly. There is a little button near the top it's not rocket science. Causing unnecessary tension on a page intended to allow people, for those who WANT to help, makes absolutely no sense. Obviously there are Mothers out there who failed at teaching tact, manners , empathy and using their inside voices. Don't agree? Can't muster up a smidge of humanity? Then there's no reason for you to be here or discount anyone else who is and wishes to assist. Again in summary: 1. Direct message the moderator/creator of the page if you MUST voice your concern 2. Just talk amongst your like minded circle of friends, don't add insult to injury on social media. Keep it contained. Think of social media as someone's house and conduct yourself accordingly. If you walk into your own home and take a shit on the carpet, all the power to ya, but think before you squat on someone else's.
Most of us are aware that MPI will cover some of the expenses....however that money will not be readily available to Kristen as soon as she needs it... I cant speak for everyone that donated but I want Kristen to be able to come home and concentrate on her and Avery's recovery without the added burden of worrying about her financial situation...She is an amazing person that has been through an unfathomable event
Ima Mcgee?! With a name like that no wonder your so ignorant. This mother will not be able to walk again...or play at the park with hwr daughter. Yes its good shes covered and some expenses are paid..but she will have a lot of extra things to pay for now...and this is permanet. Forever...i hope she gets a million dollars! She deserves it for saving her child and being a hero....shame on you for being so heartless!
As a person whom was injured in a car accident and it has taken over a year for surgery, a lot of physiotherapy and chiropractic care. I can attest that MPI covers only the bare minimum 42 sessions in track 1 and then after surgery another 42 sessions. They do cover loss wages but that takes almost 4 weeks to receive. This family will have a long road to recovery and MPI probably will not foot the whole bill. So why not help them out? Why be judgemental?
It truly amazes me the judgemental posts that appear on something that is so tragic and heartbreaking. Bernadette O'Grady if horses played hockey I'm sure you would be on their team. Your truly worried about a cell phone issue? I hope this never happens to anyone in your family given your judgemental views I still hold compassion for human beings judgement or not. Did it ever occur to you the shock Kristen was experiencing, how in the world would she first think to search the smashed up recognizable car for her purse etc. Her first thought was protecting her 4 yr old daughter. So before you judge and make your little innuendo comments think first before you type and hide behind your computer screen.
While this accident sucks, it's great that both are alive and hope that they make a full recovery. I have to question what the point of this GoFundMe is for. As this was an auto accident, MPI will be covering everything. Health, the vehicle (whatever happens to it), lost wages (even if she has no job, MPI has a pay for people who are stay at home parents), rehab, the works. What is this money going to be used for? You are setting this up for 15k, but why? I understand if this was another province, or like the US, where you may not have the coverage for something like this. Thankfully we live in a province that provides fantastic coverage, when stuff like this happens. Also, this is completely taxable monies, which many people do not realize and CRA is cracking down on this more and more. So the family receiving this will have to pay 25-35% back in taxes next year. As an insurance broker in MB, I think this is a waste and the monies could be put towards things that are much more useful.
If you are touched or moved by this story, and would like to help with a donation, then do so. I will be. If you are touched or moved by this story, but feel a cash donation is inappropriate, then don't donate. Whatever you do though, do not get caught up in the social media frenzy misconception and delude yourself into thinking that your opinion is so important and earth shattering that you should share it here. This is not the time and certainly not the place. Discuss it offline with your friends and let us help this family without you.
My heart is in sorrow for what happened and my prayers go out to Kristen and Avery. You guys are hating on Ima McGee but a part of me agree's with them. I love donating and especially to causes like this but knowing GoFundMe takes 8% + .30 per transaction kills me. We have donated $68,187. GoFundMe takes $5386.77 + .30 of 1,044 ($313.20) .. Total = $5700!!!!!! I don't know about you guys but $5700 could go a huge way to assisting Kristen and Avery. Wish this was done at a local bank or something else along those lines where $5700 was taken from this mother and daughter in need.. Just one man's opinion!
@Ima McGee... It is clear that your line of business has jaded your heart, and you lack compassion for people's tragedies that your business "pays out for". I am trying to figure out how you know anything about this woman and her insurance coverage. I cannot imagine someone that knows her, would say something so cold "As an insurance broker in MB, I think this is a waste and the monies could be put towards things that are much more useful." Wow.... like... what, your business? Consider the fact that she's a single parent, who CLAWED HER WAY OUT OF A DITCH, with a broken neck, arms, wrist, and rib, after being out all night long, to try to save her 4 year old daughter who was possibly going to freeze to death in -20c. I honestly cannot even imagine why you find it appropriate at all to question the point. That's like walking into a hospital and saying that the flowers someone brought are a waste of money as they are going to die anyway. Apparently your mother didn't teach you if you cant say something nice when others are hurting (and in this case, on a page that is specifically fundraising for an extremely powerful and rare Mama who literally sacrificed herself to save her child.) The money is for her to do whatever she wants with. Why is it your concern? I donated, and I don't even know her. Honestly, I feel like you must be a troll that takes pleasure in poking at and upsetting other people, in their times of sadness or hurt. Shooting down the efforts that everyone has taken, to do good for these two souls? Shame on you. Let people raise money, and if the govt takes 25-35%, it's still more money than she had in the bank to begin with.
I am so sorry for this young lady and her daughter. I will pray for them. I have a comment to make about the gofundme. It's just like a gift of any kind, once you give it to them, it is theirs to do with as THEY please. If these people did not want them to have it they would not have given it. No one forced them to give what they felt in their heart was the right thing to do. Besides, it's no one's business what kind people do for someone. You never know when you will be on the other side of the spectrum. You may need something and someone some day. Kindness is always returned in one way or the other. That's because of the awesome God we serve. . God bless all.
One thing some people should know is that we all have a choice to donate to a cause if anyone has a problem with it ignore it and move on and leave your rude comments to yourself because we choose to do this not because she needs the money but to show her that we care and support her! We all love and care about you Kristen and Avery and were praying for you! You've impressed me with how tough you are! That's my little sis you haven't changed a bit! Have a speedy recovery!
Ima, I know none of you people but I do know the costs of having to travel back and forth to hospitals, specialists, etc. Unless you have savings, the money is never there when you need it. MPI is not waiting at the local gas pump waiting to fill it up for you or buying a lunch when you have to wait for an appointment. They will definitely not buy her a new vehicle.
I've heard of this happening, but the thing is the money is needed now. By the time insurance gets involved it is a long time down the road. At least if they have to pay taxes by then hopefully the insurance money will cover it. Maybe your comment should have been just a heads up instead of this is a waste of time.
