This is my brother-in-law, Dan, and my 3 nieces. My sister married a good one. He snuggles and prays with his girls every night. He works hard to provide for his family.  Dan and Sarah Gurley are a special couple. Their love for each other and for their three adorable daughters is evident to all. There is no mistaking this is an exceptional family.  Their loving care extends beyond their family to the students at the international school in NY where they both teach and they have impacted many lives of both foreign and American students.

Dan and Sarah are excited for a new opportunity as Dan accepted a job at a school and are moving to Indianapolis, IN in just a couple weeks. They bought a house and have been eagerly anticipating this new chapter in their lives.

Just days after accepting a new job and finding out they are pregnant with their 4th child, their world changed.

On May 31, 2018, Dan was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer- choroidal malignant melanoma. It's a primary cancer of the eye and impacts only 6 people out of one million. The treatment for such a cancer requires an ophthalmic oncologist, rare specialists that don't reside in their area. Dan was referred to a specialist at the Cleveland Clinic and will undergo radiation treatment from June 29-July 2. They will implant a radioactive plate on the back of Dan's eye, covering the tumor. It will stay on his eye during the weekend while he stays in the hospital, transmitting radioactive waves into the tumor that entire time. Due to the radiation, Dan is not allowed to have pregnant visitors so Sarah will not be able to see him.  The surgeon will also perform a biopsy of the tumor to determine the category of his cancer. Depending on the results, that will determine what type of follow up schedule Dan will have. The more aggressive the cancer, the more rigorous the follow up schedule.  After the plate is removed, Dan will go home to rest and return to the Cleveland Clinic one week later. After that, he will need to have follow-up scans every three months then six months then yearly.

There is a very long and costly road ahead for the Gurleys in regards to Dan's treatment, along with a move, and another baby on the way. Their health insurance will change in September after their move to Indiana so their deductible will go back down to zero, making the financial burden of the follow-up tests even greater.

The medical bills are already rolling in for the Gurleys and will continue to come in throughout the summer.  We want to raise $12,000 within the next few months to help the Gurleys with their medical expenses, travel, and lodging during the course of Dan's treatment and follow ups.

Thanks for considering how you can help my sister and her family. They are certainly worthy of our love and support.

This may be a repeat for those of you who follow Sarah on Facebook, but regardless, here is the update on Dan:

Dan is back from Cleveland Clinic. Thank you so very much for praying.

He will go back next week for a follow-up and then back every 3 months for a while so he can receive laser treatment to help protect his optic nerve. We don't know yet if the radiation was effective but we will update you when we know. Also, we don't know yet if he still has vision in his eye.

Sarah and Dan will need to wait a month for the results of the biopsy to determine what kind of cancer it is - whether it's likely to come back or not. Sooo.... more waiting for these guys.

In the meantime, they are preparing to move to Indy. Thanks for your continued prayers and support for Sarah, Dan, and the girls. No doubt they are going through a lot. What a blessing it is to have such a strong support system. Thank you, everyone.

Here is a note from Sarah:

“We are so thankful for all the prayers and support we have received. We are humbled and blown away by the generosity of so many people. All donations, no matter the size have impacted us greatly. We wish we could thank each of you individually, and we will try, but for those we don't know or the anonymous donors, we want to thank you all. You have lightened our load and allowed us to let go of the financial burden that was sitting on top of the other burdens we are carrying. So thank you!”

Today's the day everyone - thanks for praying!!!

Dan begins radiation treatment today at the Cleveland Clinic. Dan's oncologist shared with him his favorable odds for healing but not for vision retention. Dan is remarkably strong in all of this. God is sustaining him. Please continue to pray for both Dan and Sarah.

We have reached over $3,000 of our $12,000 goal. Thanks for your support everyone and please keep on sharing their story.

This picture was shared by Sarah on Facebook recently. Its so encouraging to know that she still has her sense of humor in all of this. Here is her caption:

His and hers ultrasounds adorn our fridge. One baby and one tumor. If we didn't have confidence in a big God, we would certainly lose our sense of humor in this. #mineisthegoodtypeofgrowth #hopefullyminewillgetbigger #hopefullyhiswillgetsmaller

Please pray for Dan as he starts radiation on Friday. He will need our prayers during this time as he will not only be going through radiation, but will also be apart from his pregnant wife and 3 daughters. Thank you everyone! Your support so far has been overwhelming and Sarah and Dan are truly grateful. We will keep you posted as Dan undergoes radiation.
