Help the Gurleys Beat Cancer

Donation protected

This is my brother-in-law, Dan, and my 3 nieces. My sister married a good one. He snuggles and prays with his girls every night. He works hard to provide for his family.  Dan and Sarah Gurley are a special couple. Their love for each other and for their three adorable daughters is evident to all. There is no mistaking this is an exceptional family.  Their loving care extends beyond their family to the students at the international school in NY where they both teach and they have impacted many lives of both foreign and American students.

Dan and Sarah are excited for a new opportunity as Dan accepted a job at a school and are moving to Indianapolis, IN in just a couple weeks. They bought a house and have been eagerly anticipating this new chapter in their lives.

Just days after accepting a new job and finding out they are pregnant with their 4th child, their world changed.

On May 31, 2018, Dan was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer- choroidal malignant melanoma. It's a primary cancer of the eye and impacts only 6 people out of one million. The treatment for such a cancer requires an ophthalmic oncologist, rare specialists that don't reside in their area. Dan was referred to a specialist at the Cleveland Clinic and will undergo radiation treatment from June 29-July 2. They will implant a radioactive plate on the back of Dan's eye, covering the tumor. It will stay on his eye during the weekend while he stays in the hospital, transmitting radioactive waves into the tumor that entire time. Due to the radiation, Dan is not allowed to have pregnant visitors so Sarah will not be able to see him.  The surgeon will also perform a biopsy of the tumor to determine the category of his cancer. Depending on the results, that will determine what type of follow up schedule Dan will have. The more aggressive the cancer, the more rigorous the follow up schedule.  After the plate is removed, Dan will go home to rest and return to the Cleveland Clinic one week later. After that, he will need to have follow-up scans every three months then six months then yearly.

There is a very long and costly road ahead for the Gurleys in regards to Dan's treatment, along with a move, and another baby on the way. Their health insurance will change in September after their move to Indiana so their deductible will go back down to zero, making the financial burden of the follow-up tests even greater.

The medical bills are already rolling in for the Gurleys and will continue to come in throughout the summer.  We want to raise $12,000 within the next few months to help the Gurleys with their medical expenses, travel, and lodging during the course of Dan's treatment and follow ups.

Thanks for considering how you can help my sister and her family. They are certainly worthy of our love and support.
