No student in the East Penn Schools should have go hungry during the school day.  Hunger increases stress, makes it more difficult to concentrate, and prevents kids from reaching their potential.  And besides, freedom from hunger should be a basic right in our community.

More than 1 in 5 East Penn students qualify for free or reduced lunches.  But some of these families still don't have enough money to pay for lunch.  Right now, such families have more than $1,775 in school lunch debt.

The goal of this campaign is to lift that burden, by paying off the lunch debt of all East Penn School district families eligible for free or reduced lunches.

Will you help?

PS: This campaign started as an idea from community members in a discussion about ending 'lunch shaming' at East Penn.  You can learn more here:  An End to Lunch Shaming in East Penn.

PSS (as requested by gofundme): My name is Ziad Munson, an Emmaus resident, father to two kids in East Penn, and a member of the East Penn School Board.   The money collected from this campaign will be donated in its entirety to the East Penn Cafeteria Fund, where I have confirmed with the superintendent of schools it will be applied to the accounts of economically disadvantaged students.

Today I sent a check for $2,297.44 to the East Penn School District to help defray the delinquent lunch balances of those families in East Penn who are most in need. This amount came from 61 different people who donated anywhere from $5 to $140 each. This has been a true community effort! Thank you.

I think our next step is a much more difficult one: finding a lasting solution to the problem of hunger in our community and our schools. A number of you have already shared some great ideas with me on tackling this problem. I like forward to working with anyone willing to take this on.

PS: $2,297.44 represents the $2,385.00 raised, minus the $87.56 gofundme charges for credit card processing.

We are VERY CLOSE to our goal of raising enough money to pay off all the lunch debt of the East Penn students in greatest need. I'm particularly heartened by the many people who have donated $5 or $10 -- they understand that every little bit helps!

Please consider emailing someone you know and asking them to join you in supporting this campaign. Just a few more donations will put us over the top.

Ladies & gentlemen, we are less than $650 away from our current goal of $1775 and that was raised by 31 donors in less than 24 hours! That right there is AMAZING! Please keep spreading the word, as this is definitely not a fund that will no longer have a need once we reach that goal. The ultimate goal is to keep that balance due at zero. Thank you all so much for supporting this campaign started by Ziad and Shana. And thank YOU to all the donors!
