We aren't normally people who ask for help, but a fire destroyed our home on Friday, December 9, and at the moment, we are unsure of the road ahead. We do have insurance, but don't yet know which bills may and may not be covered, especially for the care of our pets. Two of our bunnies (pictured) and our two dogs made it through thanks to the quick action of several brave souls, but our tortoises fell through a burning floor, and are currently under intensive medical care. Unfortunately, a couple of other animals weren't as lucky.

Many people have reached out to ask how they could help, or what they might donate, and we are grateful for all of the well-wishes, but since we've lost nearly all of our possessions, are currently in short-term housing, and our home won't be rebuilt for months, we really have no idea what we'll need first, or when we'll need it. Launching this campaign seemed like the most effective way of giving all those who want to help an opportunity to cover whatever unanticipated needs might arise, and those fiunds we don't use to rebuild our lives and our home will be donated to charities that help others (human and animal) in challenging times.

I need to begin by thanking everyone again for their support; it is so comforting to know that so many people have wanted to help us rebuild and restore our lives. We are getting back onto our feet, and I plan on returning to work tomorrow (January 3). Our tortoises are both eating again, which is a very good sign, and they will soon be off of their medication. So far, our insurance company has been very cooperative, and we have recently signed a work authorization for the reconstruction to begin; it should take about four months once the permits have been approved. At present, we are in a rental home, with rental furniture, but we are looking forward to the time when we can return to our rebuilt house. Thank you again to everyone for their support.

The past week has been long and busy, but we are making progress. Thankfully, with the support we have received from everyone who contributed, we are making it through. Our long-term housing situation might soon be settled; our realtor has been working hard to secure a rental home one neighborhood over from where we lived, and a kind family appears to be willing and able to take Frodo, our lovable (but rambunctious) dog. Receiving delicious meals from helping hands has also been great. Thank you again to everyone who has offered help; it is much appreciated. Our tortoises Leo and Joseph (formerly Josephine) remain stable, and will have a visit with the veterinarian on Friday. We hope to post additional good news in coming days, and we are eternally grateful for all of the kind thoughts and well wishes we've received.

The past two days have been extremely long, filled by visits with adjusters, fire inspector, our children's schools, and the restoration company, but it is a tremendous comfort to know that we're being supported so much along the way. As of now, the home appears to be a total loss, with only a few items that can probably be salvaged. The fire appears to have started behind the wall of our daughter's room, so it is very fortunate that nobody was home, because it appears that it could have gone off at any time. Amazing work that the fire inspector was able to do, and he has definitely seen far worse. For that, and for many other reasons, we consider ourselves very fortunate. Thank you again. As you can see in the attached photo, our tortoises are in stable condition, but they have a long road to recovery. If anybody might know someone who is interested in adopting a sweet (but very excitable) dog, please send them this link: http://www.adoptapet.com/pet/17206586-yardley-pennsylvania-retriever-unknown-type-mix

We just can't express our gratitude enough for all of the support we've been shown. Times are rough, but it's a huge comfort to know that we are surrounded by such caring souls everywhere we turn. The bright side of humanity is really shining through.
