Dusty Needs Dental Surgery!

Donation protected
Years ago, Dusty was rescued from a shelter’s euthanizing line, having been abandoned because of a simple urinary infection. Adopted by my sister Laura, he’s long since proven to be the sweetest cat imaginable with the biggest personality. Part Maine Coon and all heart, Dusty loves cuddles, leisurely trips outdoors, and lounging in baskets and blanket forts. Laura has provided him with all care and adoration a cat could hope for, and Dusty has been a loyal companion for as long as they’ve been together (almost a decade).

Sadly, Dusty’s life has been constantly plagued by long-term medical conditions; he’s currently receiving treatment for sinus and kidney conditions. However, the problems we’re addressing on this page are more severe. Two years ago, Dusty was diagnosed with diabetes and has since been treated with insulin and dietary plans. Nothing has been shown to satisfactorily manage his potentially life-threatening illness, with Dusty’s blood sugar readings being consistently erratic despite ceaseless care.

BUT THERE’S HOPE. A new vet has proposed a fresh explanation to Dusty’s condition: his diabetes have been caused (or at least aggravated) by feline tooth resorption (FORP). FORP is a very painful condition wherein tooth cells break down irregularly, and because blood sugar levels have been shown to be directly affected by heavy stress, the connection seems likely. The vet is confident that treating the FORP won’t only spare Dusty lots of pain, but would also either improve the state of his diabetes or even completely cure him of the condition. After years of seeking treatment from different vets, this approach seems very promising.

However, WE NEED YOUR HELP. Dusty’s appointment for dental surgery is approaching quickly (June 20, 2018) and we need financial assistance. Laura has spared no expense over the years for Dusty to get the treatment he needs, having regularly taken on part-time work in addition to her full-time job to make it possible. Non-emergency expenses of her own (e.g. new eyeglasses) have been put off to cover Dusty’s needs. Right now, she is still paying off previous medical bills, and in addition to regular living expenses, the financial burden has become unbearable.

Not getting dental surgery to correct the FORP could mean an infinitely bigger long-term cost (i.e. regularly buying insulin) and will definitely mean pain and suffering for Dusty. This is NOT an option.

The money you donate towards our stated goal will help cover the cost of the dental surgery and subsequent pain management therapy. Any additional donations will go towards covering the financial losses Laura experiences for taking time off from work to attend to Dusty.

We can’t do this alone. Please consider making a donation to help give Dusty a healthier life. If that’s not possible for you right now, please share this page wherever you can.
