In October 2016, Dusty-lee's medal winning performance at the 2016 WorldSkills Australia National Competition earned her a place on the Worldskills Australia Skills Squad team among Australia’s best young skilled apprentices and trainees.

Dusty-lee, along with 17 of Australia’s current National Champions from their particular trade or skill has now been succesfully selected to join the elite *2017 Skillaroos forming part of Team Australia that will go on to represent Australia at the world’s largest vocational skills competition – the WorldSkills International Competition, which will take place in Abu Dhabi in October 2017.

Dusty-lee is working tirelessly every day to reach her goal of winning the Gold Medal while representing her country in Abu Dhabi. Often referred to as the Olympic Games for Skills and Trades, the WorldSkills International Competition will see the world’s best trade young men and women, from 76 nations, compete in 50 different categories for the title of World Champion.

To ensure Dusty-lee has the best possible chance of winning a medal, she is now taking on an intensive training program and along with her mentors, category experts and a team of dedicated volunteers Dusty-lee will train and develop her skills, her decision making abilities and build the resilience needed to compete against the world’s best.

With your help we can provide Dusty-lee with the best possible opportunity to achieve her full potential, represent WorldSkills Australia at the International Competition in Abu Dhabi in October and come home with a medal.

ABOUT DUSTI-LEE:
Dusti-lee Franchi’s career in vehicle painting began in an unlikely place – a hairdressing salon.

Dusti-lee had started training as a hairdresser but was having doubts about her career choice when inspiration hit.

“I thought, ‘Let’s give fixing cars a go!’” says Dusti-lee.

“I went and asked for work experience at a panel and paint shop every Thursday and Friday while I was at school. They put me in the spray painting side and I absolutely loved it!”

Based in Perth, Dusti-lee trained at the South Metropolitan TAFE, and has not looked back.

Currently employed by Stokes and Renk Panel and Paint, she says the best part about her skill is “seeing the end result”.

“You then see what all of your hard work has done and it makes it all worth it. The end result is so satisfying, especially knowing that you’re going to make the customer very happy.”

Dusti-lee says participating in a WorldSkills competition is a “career changer” and anyone thinking about it should “just go for it”.

“Not everyone gets this chance and you would be crazy to turn it up. It has been a life changing experience … it has definitely helped me further my skills in many different ways and helped make me into the best that I could possibly be.”

Dusti-lee plans to open her own vehicle painting business and pass down her knowledge and experience to the next generation of skilled car painters.

Dusti-lee is being supported on her WorldSkills journey by Axalta.

*2017 Skillaroos are champions chosen to represent Australia on the world’s trade and skills stage, and help to secure the future of the skilled Australian workforce.

** Australia is currently ranked 12th in the world and in 2017 we aspire to break into the top 10.
