Flexible seating for flexible learners! With this project, I hope to provide flexible or alternative seating options for my second graders this school year.
Children are natural movers. They are active and many are fidgety. It can be hard for a young child to sit still for a long period of time on those hard, traditional classroom chairs.
My goal this year is to completely eliminate those traditional chairs from my classroom. I would like to provide balance balls, wobble chairs, soft seats, and large floor pillows for working around the classroom. Flexible seating options will allow my students to choose the working environment that best suits their individual needs to move or wiggle without causing a distraction to others.
My hope is that by allowing them to use flexible seating options, they will feel empowered to make responsible choices for their learning and pick seating that supports their needs and increases attention. Research suggests that students who participate in physical activity in the classroom are more likely to stay on task. Movement and physical activity are also linked to higher grades, increase in engagement, and improved participation.
With your help, my second grade students will be able to move their bodies throughout the day as they learn and ultimatley, become more successful learners. They would be so grateful!
