Hello everyone,

As some of you might know I traveled to Haiti last spring to work construction on a preschool in the small coastline town of Belle Anse. Since then I have continued my work with the group that introduced me to the plight of this city and country, Return2Haiti. On a recent trip of Return2Haiti, we discovered that a boy has been diagnosed with tuberculosis of the leg, a serious but treatable disease. This child, Ducène, is the brother of someone who my friend Quintin and I have taken under our wing the past year in order to give him a chance to have a self-productive life. However, this problem we can not solve alone. The treatment for his condition is quite intensive and requires six months of treatment. Ducène has already arrived at the Paul Farmer Hospital in Mirebalais and is all set to begin treatment! The estimated cost of treatment is between $5,000-$6,000. So, I ask for any and all to donate whatever they can, and use this not as a one-time act of kindness but rather a catalyst for continued action in whatever causes interest you.

Thank you,

Will Kunz

Hello everyone,
A little update: Ducene is still in the Haitian medical system, however, his condition is not getting better. They are struggling to figure out what is the exact cause of his infection. He continues to have surgeries to clean the leg, but they are not helping very much. To combat this we are trying to send him to the US. This process is quite difficult as he needs to get a medical visa etc. Therefore, we still need money to support his care in Haiti as well as to save up to prepare to send him to the US. As of now, we are trying to have him stay for free care at the University of Michigan. We would still need to pay for housing and food as he recovers as well as travels.

Thanks,
Will Kunz

Ducène has already had two surgeries on February 22nd and 23rd for two reasons. First to clean out the affected area and second to collect more samples for analysis. He is happy and doing well even though there have been some difficulties in treatment. Fane is to travel to a hospital in Port-Au-Prince to get more information on the samples collected in the last surgeries.

Thanks,
Will Kunz

Hello everyone,
I am pleased to announce that everything is going well, and both Ducène and Fane are doing great. Below there are photos of their living conditions; they are staying in a hotel-style room with no kitchen and few amenities (you can see the plastic chair they are sitting on below).
Also, I would like to mention the other members who went on the trip with me last spring: Kristen, Jim, and Quintin Grabowski, Cynthia and Pierre Balthazar, Janice Nelson, and my parents Jon Kunz and Pam Murphy.

A little update: all money will be transferred to Return2Haiti ( http://www.return2haiti.org/) which is overseeing the treatment and are in direct contact with both Ducène and his caretakers. Ducène is beginning treatment in Mirebalais; he has traveled with Fane (a Haitian who has worked with Return2Haiti before) because his mother can not travel with him.

Here is a breakdown of the costs.
Housing: $300/month
Food: $300/month
Incidentals and transportation: $20/month
Stipend for Fane: $50/month
Monthly donation to Napoleon's organization: (which is making sure Ducène continues to get the care he needs through the hospital) $100/month
Fees to send money: $15/month
