Since May 2018 Lyme Disease has been winning the battle against Ana Teresa. She needs your help to face the financial burden that this became and kick out the disease.

Lyme Disease is an infectious disease transmitted when a tick (sometimes other insects) infected with the bacteria Borrelia burgdorferi bites and transmits the bacteria to the new host. The list of possible symptoms is wide and although it's not a disease discovered recently, it is still an enigma to the medical community with no identified efficient treatment when in later stages.

Ana Teresa had the first severe symptoms in May, with a sequence of symptoms that imitated other illnesses (as it's common with Lyme). At some point, her joints were severely affected and leg movements became conditioned; walking became a difficult task and up and down stairs or up or downhill was almost impossible. Fatigue became impeditive of performing regular activity. Nausea, headaches, muscle pain, mood alterations, air hunger.

Lyme Disease diagnosis is very difficult and in many cases people live years without a diagnosis and treatment. For Ana Teresa, was only possible in August, after much persistence from herself, while doctors always ruled out the possibility of a tick borne disease even before any test. Luckily, results of blood tests taken by her own initiative came positive. This brought the possibility to approach the doctors with some indication that Lyme Disease should be taken in consideration. At the hospital a Western Blot test (a test for counter results) came positive and the diagnosis was confirmed.
1st test positive
2nd test positive

First treatment was prescribed immediately, a course of antibiotics - doxycycline and cefaclor - for 21 days. The symptoms aggravated during treatment (which is normal, it's what's called Jarisch-Herxheimer reaction) and there was lack of guidance in this first approach (only found out later when studying the disease better), as detoxing is essential when dealing with Lyme Disease, specially while on treatment.

The initial treatment didn't work, as it didn't eliminate the bacteria of the body and symptoms persisted.

Meanwhile, Ana Teresa tried acupuncture to alleviate symptoms, which gave good results. It already helped unblock certain movements of the knees (although kneeling is still not possible).
A strict diet is also being followed to support the immune system and create an alkaline environment, hostile to the bacteria.

Other symptoms have started to show, such as numbness of hands, tingling, brain fog, joint and muscle pain spread through the body.

Different experts in Lyme Disease were consulted and they were of the opinion that Lyme has probably been lingering around in Ana Teresa, in a dormant state, for more than just months, maybe around 2 years, according to clinical diagnosis. New treatment has been selected and it is previewed to last 6 months and it's plant based (plants are proving to be more effective with Lyme for several reasons, including dealing with the many mutations the bacteria undertake to defend itself).

Working previously as a freelancer in social and educative projects with different groups of people, Ana Teresa is now unable to make any professional commitments, given her limited capacities and uncertainty about if and when she will be free from Lyme Disease.

The funding goes to cover for:

- Series of doctors' appointments and exams done up to this moment to diagnose and figure out how to deal with the disease
- Acupuncture sessions that help relief the symptoms
- Herbal treatment (tinctures, prepared specifically for this case by an expert, and advisory) for the next 6 months
Supplements, including probiotics,  which she is taking since August, essential to support the immune system (every Lyme Disease patient needs these)
- Organic food, which is essential to support the immune system and create an alkaline environment, hostile for the bacteria (every Lyme Disease patient needs these)

Dear friends,

I am happy to write to you today. It is one of those days when I believe fiercely that it will go away, that my health can see better days and that it is possible to regain my life back.

One month has passed since I last wrote and it seems like a lifetime. The ups and downs keep me busy trying to focus on my only present aim, healing from Lyme.
Often, feelings of discouragement, doubt, uncertainty, hopelessness and impotence build up inside me and take over. These are the moments when I am reminded again and again that this is happening to me now, that it is not an illusion or a bad dream, it is real.

There was an attempt to increase the treatment dosage but the reaction was too intense and painful. That is not how it should be, so I went back to the previous dosage. By now it stabilised again, meaning that sometimes I have acute joint and muscle pain and headache and immeasurable fatigue, but overall I can function through my daily routine at home with some going out.
The great news is that the reaction to the increase of dosage means I am responding 100% to treatment!

Maybe soon there will be another adjustment to treatment, trying to build up without causing disruption. That is how we need to work with Lyme, taking substances to break the biofilm that protects the bacteria, kill the bacteria, detoxing to clear the dead bacteria and toxins released by the dying process, slowly so that it doesn't detect the threat and hide in deeper tissues until it's safe to go about again and continue causing damage.
Meanwhile, keeping a diet that doesn't feed the bacteria and that doesn't support inflammation. I am on a vegan (with exception from organic chicken broth once in a while), gluten-free, sugar-free diet and it seems to suit my case. Since I have changed my diet, it is normal that my body deals with it in a different way, so I am not worried about the weight loss at the moment.

Thanks to your support, the result of the fund raising has been helping me sustain this whole treatment and healing process, taking away the financial concern. This is extremely important to find peace in accepting the way this all goes. Knowing that you understand a bit where I am at the moment and having you by my side has been crucial for my empowerment in healing myself.

Thank you with all my heart!

May all our lives be filled with peace and joy,

Sincerely yours,
Ana Teresa

Dear friends,

It is with great commotion that I write this message to thank everyone who showed in their own way their solidarity towards my current health condition.

Today the goal of this fundraising has been reached and this is a relief to the financial challenge this disease brought my way. Every single contribution, being it in funds, sharing the campaign, offering different sorts of support or reaching to me with kindness and compassion has an inestimable value. I am sure all of this is already having a powerful role in my healing.

Besides, I am glad to realize that this campaign had also a multiplying effect. By letting it out there, more people became aware of Lyme Disease and did research on it. This can help preventing it. Also, other people who are suffering with Lyme got in contact and I could help with the knowledge and network I have built so far.
This is a great achievement, as I find meaning in it, and to have a purpose is a valuable stimulus to embrace life.

This message serves as well to update you on my healing process.
I have started the herbal treatment almost 2 weeks ago. I can feel that the Borrelia doesn't like what I am giving to my body, as she is fighting back, causing more joint and muscle pain and fatigue. The numbness of hands and arms seems to be gone since I've started the treatment. With the cold weather, I have to focus even more in giving my immune system the resources that it needs for all the work it's doing. At the moment, it is as if I have a constant flu.
I am on a good path to regain the weight that I have lost in the last couple of months. The photo shows a sample of the great healing food funded by this campaign. The other photo shows natural medicine I am using (herbal tinctures, herbs and roots for infusions, different supplements and probiotics).
Reading, being in touch with friends, cooking, listening to music, walking in the woods (within my possibilities) keep my heart warm and help me focus on staying positive.

It is a long journey, one that I don't know when it will end and what it will bring, one full of suffering but as well full of learning.

I am immensely grateful that you have chosen to be by my side.

Thank you / Bem hajam

With love,

Ana Teresa
