DSA TLH Hurricane Relief Fund

$9,360 of $10,000 goal

Raised by 158 people in 1 month
Created October 10, 2018

This fund is dedicated to helping the Tallahassee chapter of Democratic Socialists of America aid in disaster relief in the aftermath of Hurricane Michael. The historic storm has devastated large swaths of the Florida Panhandle and thousands of people are in dire need across the region.

The proceeds of this fundraiser will fund supplies for direct aid efforts by local DSA members and to lend help to other organizations providing relief in a manner consistent with socialist tenets.

Thank you for helping us rebuild on behalf of working-class interests, not disaster capitalists.

Cosby Hayes
Co-Chair, Tallahassee DSA

UPDATE: Since our last update, members of Tallahassee DSA have participated in dozens of efforts and actions to distribute supplies, feed hungry people, coordinate with vulnerable migrant and minority communities, clear debris and repair damaged homes exposed to the elements, run laundry for folks out of power long-term, and organize with other DSA chapters and left groups to provide relief in the most democratic, bottom-up way possible.

Communities which have benefited directly from your contributions include Blountstown in rural Calhoun County, ravaged by the storm still without power for weeks and permanently altered by Michael's winds; Port St. Joe in coastal Bay County, just 10 minutes east of Mexico Beach (spared from total destruction but without power or running water for at least a month); the city of Quincy where communities of color are struggling to apply for FEMA relief, many of whom are undocumented and hesitate to engage with personnel charged with distributing state aid; here in Tallahassee, the region's major population center where damage and the loss of groceries has disproportionately affected poor and working people; and half a dozen others where we've dropped off supplies, toiletries, food and gasoline to folks in need.

We've combined forces with DSA chapters in Tampa, Orlando, the Space Coast, New Orleans, and Miami on relief tactics and strategy, as well as coordinated with the Florida People's Advocacy Center, the Poor People's Campaign, and the local chapter of PSL.

Along the way we have spread goodwill for socialism, labor-powered movements and left-wing politics, fueled by thousands of dollars in supplies and hundreds of hours of volunteer labor.

We've established a a 501(c)(3) to help administer the collected funds. In the meantime we've run it through DSA board member Micah Maxwell's account until that official account is ready, at which time we will transfer all funds raised from this campaign there in accordance with GoFundMe protocol.

I assure you no personal gain has or will result from this campaign. In fact, all of us has paid significant costs out of pocket and we are happy to do so. We will provide receipts and be accountable for all expenditures.

We are so grateful to all who have made this possible and do not intend to stop until the vast need is exhausted.

Thank you.

In solidarity,

Cosby Hayes

UPDATE: After clearing brush and felled trees today in Frenchtown and feeding folks in the South City neighborhood of Tallahassee, we are buying supplies and meeting up tonight with mutual aid partners from Mutual Aid Disaster Relief, Poor People's Campaign and Socialist Rifle Association to go out west to Quincy and Blountstown which have seen deaths and mass destruction.

Thank you all so much for your generosity. Much more to come.
