Every year, UXO kill 15,000 to 20,000 people — most of them children, women and the elderly — and severely maim countless more. Scattered in some 90 countries, UXO are an ongoing reminder of conflicts past.
Surviving far longer than their combatants, the physical remnants of wars will continually claim the lives of innocent victims; those born years, even decades after the battles have ended.
UXO is an explosive weapon (bombs, shells, grenades, landmines, naval and cluster mines, etc.) that did not explode when deployed and therefore still pose a detonation risk years, even decades, later.
The United Nations estimates there are over one hundred million UXO remaining worldwide. With focused global solutions and efforts, it is projected it will take more than 600 years to clean up exisitng UXO and far longer for contaminated environments to fully heal and regenerate themselves.
HK Robotics, a Hawaiian based company, is on a dedicated mission to evoke global change with custom robotics and drone technology specifically designed for UXO detection, mapping, and clearing. The use of HKR technology to locate and diffuse/remove UXO, reduces accidental detonation by innocent civilians and drastically enhances bomb technician safety measures by removing the need for direct human operator contact.
In November 2015 HK Robotics introduced its technology and prototype in Washington DC; garnering the support and interest of key congressmen. HK Robotics was extended an invitation to provide full demonstrations to the US Marine Corps and Defense Comittee Congressional Members.
Several components of HK Robotics aerial drone, the HK-1, are complete and fully tested. HK Robotics needs funding to complete several prototypes for pending and future demonstrations.
FACTS:
Northern Somolia 1991 - 75% of UXO victims were children. Sadly, children are at a higher risk of falling victim post conflict because in many instances they are forced to become nomadic to help support their families with livestock or to forage for food and water.
EPA 2002 – Regarding UXO in the United States alone, the EPA declared that UXO pose “an imminent and substantial health risk which will require the most costly domestic environmental clean-up in history at nearly $14 billion". UXO have been found at 16,000 inactive military ranges in the U.S; collectively 15 million acres – or roughly the size of Florida. Without clean up, these areas will remain unusable.
Camp Pendleton CA 2013 – Four marines, each a highly trained bomb removal technician, were killed by an explosion while clearing UXO from a firing range in an attempt to make it safe for continual training maneuvers
Kaho`olawe Island Hawaii 2015 - Commandeered in 1940 and used by the Navy for weapons training for 40 years, 25% of this once rich, sacred island is still considered hazardous and unapproachable due to the continued presence of UXO.
Vietnam - Since 1975 more than 100,000 Vietnamese have been affected (42,132 killed, 62,163 wounded) by land mines or other abandoned explosives since the war ended 40 years ago.
UXO do not discriminate; they kill or injure civilians, aid workers, peacekeepers, animals and soldiers alike. The true questions are not if, but when, these UXO will explode and who/what they will continually claim as innocent victims long after the conflicts have ended.
The mission of HK Robotics, LLC is tri-fold:
Technology - Provide cost effective aerial and ground drone technology to locate, remove or safely diffuse unexploded ordnances (UXO)
Humanitarian - Prevent loss of life or mortal maiming due to innocent, accidental UXO detonation.
Environmental - Prohibit toxic pollution by locating, removing or safely diffusing from the environment prohibiting caustic components from leeching into vital resources.
