A RESURRECTION STORY:
April 10, 2017: We are continuing on our journey to help this family through our Neighbors helping Neighbors Project. As we continue to raise funds, and donations of renovation supplies, our volunteers are busy finalizing the renovation schedule and organizing volunteer crews.

Thank you for your continued support as we work to get this family back into their dream home. They are working very hard along side our team to accomplish the rebirth of their home.

March 13, 2017: We are so excited to share good news - thank you for your continued support and prayers as we work as a community to help this young family get back into their fire damaged home!

1) Latoria and Antonio have full time jobs now and are doing well in their new jobs.

2) They are in temporary housing which we have furnished with donations and the family is safe and warm.

3) We are have raised 1/3 of our goal and are working on raising more funds and getting renovation supplies donated or at cost from suppliers.

4) Volunteers will begin working with the family in early May or as soon as weather/funds permit.

A blink of an eye. That’s all it took for Latoria and Antonio to see their dream Detroit home and hopes for a solid future for their 3 children go up in smoke. On September 22nd, Latoria and her 3 year old son went to the corner store only to return a few moments later to find their home in flames from an electrical fire. Thankfully no one was injured.

Everything they had worked for since they purchased the home from Fannie Mae in 2012 and most of their belongings were destroyed or severely damaged from the fire, smoke, and water damage. While relatives and friends are providing temporary housing, and the Red Cross is providing some resources the BIG question is HOW ARE THEY GOING TO MOVE FORWARD? With limited financial resources– (could not afford insurance) and both in underpaid part-time employment positions – the future looked bleak – but they did not want to WALK AWAY from Detroit or their home and their positive spirit, faith, hope, and determination became contagious.

Latoria contacted St. Vincent de Paul at St. Clare of Montefalco parish on Detroit’s east side to see if they had any ideas. St. Vincent de Paul had sponsored her oldest daughter at summer camp last year. Their story was shared and the entire St. Clare Community was touched by the young family. St. Clare’s NEIGHBORS HELPING NEIGHBORS team met with the family and developed a plan that used the labor and skills of their family and friends to do the necessary demolition work on the inside of the home while volunteers worked on the outside.  Action was also taken to help in obtaining materials needed to make their house a home again.

Great progress has been made at the home and toward a stronger future for the family. Latoria and Antonio recently started better paying FULL time jobs and they are looking forward to continuing to rebuild their home and a brighter future for their children. The BIG challenge that remains is procuring the materials, man power, and professional resources needed to make this house a home again.

This GoFundMe account is to raise funds for materials and the professional contractors for the work that Antonio and volunteers cannot do on their own.

Won’t you please join us in helping this young family in their journey to the future? Materials and contractors will be coordinated and paid for from this fund by the NEIGHBORS HELPING NEIGHBORS team at St. Clare.

Thank you for your help – together we can build a better community.
