Former Lobo Devon Williams is defying the odds by getting back on the Basketball Court
In November of 2015 I received news from my physician that I would never play basketball again. I was diagnosed with spinal stenosis- a narrowing of the spinal cord. It was very difficult to accept as basketball was my life.
However, through prayer, hard work and the support of my family and friends I was able to accept the path that God put me on. I started making plans for "post basketball life". I considered coaching and worked with athletes through the African American Student Services program at the University of New Mexico. I was also blessed to finish both my Bachelors and Masters degrees at the same university.
After being evaluated by my physician, I was approved to play basketball at the recreational level. Due to the progress I was making, I was referred to additional specialists for evaluation and I am now approved to play at a professional level!
I now have the opportunity to try out for a professional team in Argentina! I am working hard to cover all of my expenses to travel to and stay in Argentina, however, I am now asking for the support of my friends and family. Any amount counts!
The money raised will be used for:
- Travel Expenses to Argentina ($2,300)
- Accommodations while in Argentina ($2,400)
- Food ($1,000)
- Expenses not forecasted ($300)
To go from being told that my career had ended to being able to try out for a professional team will be an amazing experience. I am truly thankful to God for presenting me with this opportunity to make my dreams come true.
