Dr. Bill Bushing's Medical Fund

Here is a summary of the last year, written by Dr.Bill Bushing:

In May of 2016 I had an attack of appendicitis two days before I was to leave to film in the Maldives. It turned out the appendix was cancerous, a fairly rare thing with only 600-1,200 cases per year. The cancer had spread to my colon, so two surgeries were performed to re-section my colon later that summer. Due to infections incurred while being hospitalized, I was in the hospital or nursing home for 11 weeks. My out-of-pocket expenses last year exceeded half my gross income.
This winter via a PET scan they discovered what they believe is cancer in my skeletal system. I will be undergoing several surgeries. The first will insert a stainless steel rod in my upper left arm bone (the humerus) and allow the surgeon to take a marrow specimen to biopsy. They still do not know what kind of cancer is in my skeletal system. It could be metastasized from my earlier cancer, be bone cancer or even just an infection. Fortunately my oncologist has ruled out multiple myeloma. Once we know what we are dealing with, I may be undergoing chemo or other treatment.
In addition I will have to undergo another abdominal surgery this summer to once again re-section my colon due to a fistula that developed last summer. I will undergo a warm chemo wash and the hole in my abdomen will be sealed.
I have Medicare Parts A and B, but because I have these pre-existing conditions, I cannot enroll in a Medicare Supplemental plan at this time.
