Dear Donor,
My son, Doug Carlson, needs your help to save his life.

Please let me explain.

On Friday, February 3 our family received devastating news! His Pancreatic Cancer had spread to his lungs and he was having trouble breathing.
Doug is 58 years old and  has been suffering from Neuroendocrine Pancreatic Cancer for over 7 years. This is a rare form of cancer.  Almost every one dies from Pancreatic Cancer within one year.
However,  intensive research on Doug's type of cancer cells has led to a new treatment called PRRT.  For most patients it can add 3 or 4 years to a person's life, enough time to receive the future therapies that are expected to extend life even further.
That would be a miracle for Doug and our family! The only treatment facility in the U.S.  at this time able to provide this new treatment is in Houston, Texas.
But Doug is getting physically weaker by the day. The surgeries, chemo and radiation treatments, medications, and multiple scans have all taken their toll. The side effects have led to chronic severe pain, almost daily vomiting, diarrhea, difficulty eating and drinking, and severe weight loss.
Through it all Doug has persevered with great support from family and friends, excellent doctors, a positive attitude, and  with prayer and meditation.
Doug seldom complains. He is thankful for still being alive but concerned that the cancer is growing stronger and catching up to him. Doug has always given a helping hand to others who need help.  Now he is the one who needs it.
Doug MUST have this new treatment as soon as possible, before he becomes too weak to qualify for it.
The challenge is the cost. His health insurance will not pay for PRRT treatments which total $40,000. There will also be numerous additional costs for the many trips from our home in California to Houston for stays up to one week per treatment.  Doug relies on his Social Security Disability to pay his bills and  cannot afford this life-saving treatment.
Please donate to help save Doug's life!
My family and I thank you so much for your consideration,

Paul Carlson, Doug's Dad

*Internal tumors have shrunk by 43%
*Bone tumors undetectable
*Ascites fluid gone and much less pain!
*He looks, feels and acts so much better!

Please help us get Doug his last treatment. His life depends on it and he needs your help!

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Update from Doug's sister Barb:

Hi Friends, Great News!
Doug and Tim got back from Houston last week right before Hurricane Harvey, so we're thankful for that.

Results after 2nd Treatment in Houston:
The PRRT is working!
The bone tumors are undetectable, basically gone,
and his bones are healing over the areas where the tumors were.

The other internal tumors (liver, lungs & abdomen)
show an average of a 43% reduction in size. WOW!!!
That's almost Half their previous size.
AMAZING RESULTS!!!

So Doug completed his 3rd treatment and will be scanned again next trip to measure more results.

THANKS to YOUR donations my brother is seeing fantastic results. We are still short the full amount for his 4th treatment and the clinic just raised their rates so please consider helping again, any amount is a help.

Thank you!!

Doug's sister Barb here with an
update on Doug:
He had his 2nd PRRT treatment in Houston last month. All went well and and scans showed no new tumor growth but they were unable to get a clear view of the existing tumors due to fluid in his abdominal area. We hope to get a clearer view at the next treatment. Then it was discovered that Doug's left lung had collapsed and he was advised against air travel to fly home.
So Doug and my husband Tim had a real-life Planes, Trains & Automobiles experience. Long story short, there was a train derailment ahead of them making train travel impossible for 2 days so they ended up having to rent a car for the remainder of the trip and drove
home to California in a marathon session. Thank you Tim for getting you guys back safe and sound!
Now looking forward to
treatment #3 sometime in August.
Treatment #2!

(Update from Doug's sister)

Just wanted to let you know that Doug just got done with the first prrt treatment in Houston and he did great!
In fact he slept through the entire 4 hrs!

No nausea or vomiting either. They loaded him up with high dose anti-nausea meds and other iv meds which really helped.

The 3 Drs we met with yesterday said they are 'optimistic' the treatments will have a significant effect on his tumors regardless of where they are located, even the tumors in his lungs.
The medicine only seeks out the rare type of cancer cells he has, not healthy cells. Basically it's 'smart' technology.

On another note, a fishing buddy, Tim Tuttle (who has been amazingly generous in many ways) found a buyer for Doug's boat. So it's bittersweet; hard to lose his customized & much-loved boat, but as Doug says 'I can't use my boat if I'm not alive'. So true. He can always get another boat.

We are scheduled to fly home to Cali tomorrow night, (April 5).
Then he will need his 2nd treatment 6-9 weeks later. Thank you for helping Doug to get started on this treatment!
