“Playgrounds play an essential role in the social, emotional, cognitive, and physical well-being of students. They are the natural ‘tool’ for children to learn to cooperate, overcome challenges, and negotiate with others. Playgrounds are where kids can find a constructive, safe place to be outside playing.”

– Kate Callahan, Principal, Dondero Elementary

Exciting Playground Master Plan Revealed

Thursday 5/9/18: Dondero Elementary School presented the Green Schoolyard Master Plan at a community input meeting showcasing the redesign of school grounds as a nature playground, the first of its kind in the city of Portsmouth.

Terrence Parker of Terra Firma Landscape Architecture designer for the new playground shared designs for the project and an overview of the benefits of nature-based play. Dondero’s nature playground builds upon nature-based initiatives already in place, such as the school garden and forest classroom. Parker has engaged in similar projects at Central School in South Berwick, Maine, and the Cornerstone School in Stratham.

For a glimpse of the new design, visit the Dondero PTA website at: http://www.donderopta.org/playground.html
Or donate using the school's GoFundMe site.

Thanks for supporting the playground fund!

Happy New Year Dondero Community!

On December 1, the Playground Committee officially kicked-off the campaign by making it’s first ever appearance in the Portsmouth Holiday Parade. Dondero parents and students marched alongside Donny, the giant Minecraft Piggie Bank, handing out campaign literature and a cool z-ring flyer to parade onlookers. Check out this link to read more about it:

As you will note, we’ve adjusted our GoFundMe goal to $20,000 (from our campaign total goal of $100,000). This should better reflect the GoFundMe appeal being a portion of the total campaign.

In addition to $20,000 the Dondero PTA set aside in March 2017, the committee has also successfully completed several smaller fundraising efforts:
Pennies for the Playground $214
Fall Bonfire Event $486
Election Day Bake Sale $538
TOKIN Fair $674
General Donations $57

In September, the Ninety Nine Restaurant, as part of their grand reopening, made a Community Donation of $1000 which PTA put towards the Playground Campaign.

Behind the scenes the committee is working with local landscape designers, civil engineers, and city leadership to get a master plan started. Watch for information on a community presentation coming up!
