In March 2016 my dad, Bill Mook, passed away from Pancreatic Cancer after previously fighting Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia (APL) and Myelodysplastic Syndrome (MDS) for many years. Ever since I can remember, my dad had to go through many chemotherapy treatments, procedures, and what seemed like a million doctors appointments. Some days were good, and other days were extremely difficult. Luckily, chemotherapy and other treatments continue to improve in their ability to cure many kinds of cancer. Although medicine develops more and more each day, researchers have not been able to find a definite answer to cancer.

The National Cancer Institute predicts that in 2016 an estimated 1,685,210 new cases of cancer will be diagnosed in the United States, and 595,690 people will die from the disease. Most people understand the terrible effects that cancer and chemotherapy have to offer either through personal experience or from a loved one. Chemo treatments can last for many long hours, and they often have grueling side effects including pain, fatigue, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, hair loss, etc. Cancer patients have many medical bills as is, but they also need many personal medical items for their treatments and procedures. The most important item for many patients to take to treatments is something entertaining to keep his/her mind off of never-ending hours spent in the same boring room.

In memory of my father, I started a campaign called "Donations for Dad," and I will be creating chemotherapy gift baskets for my senior project which will include a variety of items including creams, lip balm, toothpaste, plastic silverware, fuzzy socks, hats, blankets, hard candy, snacks, puzzles, gift cards, games, encouraging words, etc. As a senior at Franklin Area High School, I am required to perform a project in order to graduate, but this is not just a project for me. It’s a mission. My mission is to touch as many lives as I can within the remaining months of senior year with the creation of these baskets, and I plan to continue my mission through my studies in becoming a medical doctor. In order to achieve the standards I have set for myself, I am going to need your help. Currently, I am accepting monetary donations of any dollar amount. Please visit my website at http://mooka17.wixsite.com/donationsfordad for more details! I would love to spread more information about my mission, receive any questions, and/or hear personal stories that anyone would like to share!

Thank you in advance for your support!
