Hi, and thanks for your interest in raising money for Qumusea District School, Fiji. My name is Julie Swan.
My husband Andrew and I had the pleasure of visiting a remote island off the northern part of Fiji, Nukubati Private Island Resort in September 2016. As part of wanting to emerge ourself in true Fijian culture, we took a small boat ride over the main island to visit the local Qumusea District School, church and village. It was during our visit to the local village school that we decided we needed to do something to help these children.
There are 98 students at the school. They are in need of the most basic necessities such as drinkable water, shoes, and toilets that actually flush. The children take turns of tipping water down the two toilets to flush them at the end of the day. The children need to bring drinking water from their village because their is no drinkable water at the school. The concrete water tanks are cracked, and the gutters rusted. They have no verandahs on their classrooms, the windows are rusted and hard to open and close, and there is no play equipment at all – just a large patch of grass where they hope to one day enjoy something to play on.
Whilst staying on the private island, we met Anthea and Mick Newton – Directors of A Day On the Green events. They were also moved to do something about helping out the school, and approached us to see if we would be interested in collaborating with them to collect funds at A Day On The Green, Bimbadgen Estate on 1st April, 2017. I was so excited to think that they too wanted to help out, and that we had the opportunity of doing something to make our goal of helping these kids a reality.
We would dearly love to raise as much money as we possibly can for this school so these beautiful children have the basic needs that they are entitled to. Every little bit helps. xx Julie Swan
