Help w/My Brother's Medical Bills!

$11,565 of $15,000 goal

Raised by 147 people in 15 months
Created July 9, 2017
My brother Nick is a freelance writer and artist and has dedicated his life to telling meaningful and transformative stories with his talent. For those who don’t know, Nick has had to pay for three skin cancer surgeries out-of-pocket due to no health insurance—two basal cell carcinomas and one squamous cell. All three involved excisions and reconstructive surgeries both. Of the two lesions on his face, one required a separate cosmetic surgeon as it was in a tricky spot. All that to say, the ordeal has been pretty catastrophic financially. This last bout with squamous cell, he tried to qualify for Medical but (amazingly, though he was only teaching one class and was well below poverty level) did not qualify as most agencies fail to understand the unique cost of living in L.A. when determining ‘financial hardship.’ He even tried to participate in a clinical study in Australia but could not get his oncologist to sponsor him. So the procedures had to be paid for out-of-pocket, (read: charged) and he has yet to recover financially. Then, at the worst possible moment, for the first time in nineteen years of teaching at Art Center, his classes were cancelled due to low summer enrollment. Bottom line—with no warning, he has zero income. He is hopeful opportunities are on the horizon, but for the moment he’s at the end of his rope, facing eviction, constant calls from creditors, insurmountable penalities and interest and ongoing health issues that require attention.

My brother has resisted being a charity case at all costs, out of simple pride. But we’ve reminded him that when he was making good money at Disney, he took care of others, often before himself. We are a family who all help one another out at some point, when we can. But my brother’s ability to be generous to loved ones is a thing of the past; he is now the one in need! Please help him pay his medical bills and follow-up with the needed Zyclara therapy ( prescriptions and dermatoloist/oncologist visits) that he's been as yet unable to do.

Breakdown of how funds will be used:

Original basal cell carcinoma excision: $2,000
Dr. David Charles Rish, Beverly Hills

Original basal cell carcinoma reconstructive: $4,500
Dr. David Sadaat, Beverly Hills

Squamous cell carcinoma excision and reconstructive: $2,500
Dr. Han Lee, Pasadena

Current health care and needed follow-up appointments with oncologist/dermatologist/Immiquimod prescriptions: $3,500
Dr. Jeff Ashley, Burbank

Pre-surgery cannabis therapy: $1,000

Additional debt accrued during ordeal: $1,500

Hello all,
Those of you who know me know this is very unlike me to air what can feel like dirty laundry. But so many have been so incredibly supportive and generous I thought in addition to privately thanking everyone I should get over myself and post an update. Eternal gratitude to those who contributed or shared the post! So sweet and restored my faith in humanity! Update: Though most of the expenses itemized in this campaign were paid for out-of-pocket and/or charged ( and other debt accrued as a result, like back taxes, etc. ) I FINALLY FINALLY worked through the system and am up and running with MediCal, so I have been able to follow-up on my skin cancer treatments. Though my last excision and reconstructive was back in January, I have needed Zyclara ( or Efudix) therapy on other areas ever since, but could not move forward with them. I now have a biopsy headed to the lab on one other area and have gotten the much needed prescription for Zyclara, which I will begin on Monday. Unfortunately, my relationship with skin cancer has been ongoing. I have jokingly called it a 'lifestyle' or a long-term relationship. I have stopped saying that and am trying to conquer its hold on me through general holistic health measures to up my immune system overall, through daily mediation since the surgery in Jan. I am very proud of the discipline I've had; I have NOT dropped the ball on my mind/body/spirit health! So, although there will be (another) procedure for the lesion being biopsied (not the knife hopefully but a less invasive cauterizing treatment since it is 'in situ,') I am hoping to put this behind me! The better news is this: Perhaps because my general immune system has been down ever since the surgery in January, I have been seeking a diagnosis for: lung issues lasting months, join pain, and complete exhaustion. I have learned a LOT and it really could be any number of immune-related conditions, However, I have decided to STOP devoting my life to running around seeking a diagnosis I do not even want, and to continue my own holistic health measures. The good news is this: with attention to my own cellular health, all of the above ( joint pain, exhaustion, and lung issues ) have slowly, slowly, over time, diminished. I feel I am nearly out of the woods. I do hope this is inspiring to someone out there who understands the mind/body/spirit connection and who wants to reclaim the power over their own health and well-being. This has been one fascinating journey for me!! Thanks again to those who care, and have stayed tuned in! I've felt very loved throughout. XOXO
