In response to his brave act of heroism and on behalf of all women everywhere this fundraiser is to aid Mr. Osborne in paying for his school tuition and all expenses related. All proceeds raised through this page will go Mr. Osborne. Pay it forward and reward his good deed.

About the campaign:
I am a volunteer on behalf of a group of New York women who read Mr. Osborne's story and wanted to personally thank him for his courageous actions. We are all locally based and wanted to show our appreciation for keeping our commutes safer.
As a fellow Bed Stuy resident and active volunteer with multiple projects I felt compelled to support the people in my community.

Until this inception of this fundraiser there was no personal relationship with Mr. Osborne, however, now I am in contact with him and keeping him updated multiple times a day on activity and kind words shared.

What we raise is being spent to pay off his student loan debt of $2,500 from the first part of his medical assistant and to pay for the remainder of the tuition to finish his degree. This will also include his scrubs, textbooks, metrocard, and other supplies he may need. Past that what is raised will be put into a checking account for him to use for other expenses such as phone bill, or if we can raise enough, rent in a place of his own.

This money will be given directly to the school and the intuition that holds his loan. I will also personally help him set up a checking account, and find housing if need be.

I would like to address any questions about our decision to speak with an advisor: For starters the institution with his school loan has since disbanded. He has no information on how to pay this loan. We are seeking council for 3 matters: as to whether a trust or a 529 would be the best method for his future student loans, whether or not there are housing options available to him and how we can set up a stipend, and to find a way for me to gift him this money without the IRS becoming involved and garnishing these funds . Our biggest concern is that he is able to reap the benefits here and the best way to do that is finding someone who knows these things. Thank you

Crazy idea: Just give him the money instead of trying to pay his bills for him. Just because he may be homeless doesn't mean he can't manage his own finances.

Thanks for your comment, Paul! Yes, we are aware that he is currently living in a shelter in Bed Stuy. We never imagined the fundraiser would take off the way it did and hope that we are able to help him get a place of his own.

I just want to commend you, Bridget, for putting this together. None of us have the right to tell you how to go about this because we didn't take initiative on making the project to begin with. You did that, and I'm sure Mr. Osborne is so grateful. I hope that Maurice gets all that he deserves and then some, thank you again for getting this started. :)

All the best as you continue your education and get back on your feet, Maurice--we need more people like you in health care. MLK Jr. says, "The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy." You are clearly demonstrating that in your own life and actions--thank you.

Mr. Osborne, your story is inspiring and I'm glad there are still people like you out there who have the courage to do the right thing. I hope I would have the same courage if I were ever put in that same situation. God bless!

I recently ran into a similar situation where I tackled a guy who had allegedly taken a cellphone from a girl he was running from in a shopping center, where my mom and I had gone to shop. I heard the girl crying out and a guy slow jogging out of the mall. I tackled him to the floor in a JCPenny and held him down on the ground while we waited for security to get there. When security did finally get there, they said there was nothing they could do, since the alleged crime did not happen in their store. Luckily, someone did manage to take the cell away from the guy while I held the perpetrator down. They were able to determine the phone was indeed the girl's phone (based on photos) and so I let the guy loose. I should have waited for the police to get there but felt I had no authority to hold him and was getting no help from anyone else, my mother was waiting with me, police took 20 + mins to get there (don't know exactly since I had to go...) Wrong or right, in the absence of a policeman or legal justice, and in light of an avoided escalation of events (thankfully no knife, no weapon), I felt a little better after remembering how hard he fell after I tackled him. Sorry! Anyway, I heard your story and I had to add a little to your fund. I wish you well and good fortune in your life, for protecting those less able to protect themselves in the hour of their need. Blessings, brother!
