TRANSFORMING A GULLY INTO A DIY SKATE PARK- A REAL STORY MADE IN JA

While skateboarding may not be as "big" as reggae or dancehall, best believe it is shaping up to evolve in an exciting way!

In recent years, the skate scene in Jamaica has grown in a significant way- attracting young individuals from all across the island. To date, there's a fairly large community of skaters- made of all genders, social class and ages! And with such a young population on the island (49% are ages 25<), it is only predicted to grow.

To date, Jamaican skaters have been holding skate sessions in various public places- on the streets, in parking lots, abandoned buildings and even rooftops. Every structure becomes a sort of "obstacle" to further ones skills.

Yet there is NO SKATE PARK IN JA.

Here's where SK876 jumped in. Skate 876 is a registered association in Jamaica founded by a group of young individuals out of Bull Bay with the objective to help propel and cultivate skate culture in an authentic way.

A few years ago, they identified a non-functional gully across the shore of the Caribbean sea. This gully was never fully built- and eventually (according to local residents) was considered to become a sewage treatment space.... meaning the sewage water would had went straight into the sea! Fortuantely, this was met with much resistance by the community!

Slowly but surely, SK876 started to gather cement, bricks & other tools to build small obstacles in the space. It eventually became a make-shift skate park.

However this space has the potential to become something bigger- with further bigger & more complex obstacles, a user-friendly entrance and a space that can be used by the skate, BMX & other communities.
So far, the project has been entirely DIY- meaning some material, 1 mason, lots of friendly helping hands, bricks, cement etc...

But to sustain momentum and progress, further funding will be needed.
It is estimated that 1 obstacle will cost $150 USD (diverse equipment, tools & skilled labour) .

The objective is to build at least 5 obstacles in the gully + a NON OBSTRUCTIVE entrance (so people don't have to jump down into the guilly anymore).

What's needed:

Cement, bricks, plyboard, mesh wire, additional masons, skilled carpenter, construction tools.

$500 USD could help complete the job and as such, create the first SKATE PARK IN JA!

Thank you in advance for your support- we appreciate it! Look out for updates!
