Diva Cups for Nepal

Donation protected
In many places throughout Nepal it is common practice for women to be banished to cowsheds during thier menstrual cycle. Culturally, many villages in western Nepal believe that if a woman steps foot in the kitchen while on her period that she will contaminate the home or be possessed by their Gods. Women must stay in the cowshed until absolved of her "impurities". The practice of eliminating a menstruating woman from the family home is called Chaupadi. Since 2007 at least 8 different women have died during stays in such places, and today almost 90 percent of Nepalese families practice this humiliating tradition.

I feel very strongly about changing these social stereotypes and I believe that knowledge is power, especially in developing countries like Nepal.

On Tuesday March 14th I leave for Kathmandu to begin hiking through the Annapurna mountain range for one month. I would like to raise as much money as possible to buy as many 'Diva Cups' as I can before I leave, to donate to women that I meet throughout the Annapurna on my journey.

The Diva Cup changed my life. If it can have such an impact on me, in Western Canada, think of the wonders it could do for a woman in one of the poorest countries in the word. Benefits of the Diva Cup include:

1. There is no cost after first purchase or donation.
2. The Diva Cup is safe. There is no risk of the possibly fatal TSS or other chemicals being released into a woman's body
3. There is no waste. The Diva Cup is reusable. Forever.
4. There are no leaks or embarassing stains.
5. There is no laundry. In places where women still use cloth for menstrual absorbtion, laundry becomes obsolete, and so do stained sheets and clothing!
6. There are no harmful hormones. The Diva Cup is 100% hormone free.

The number 1 goal of providing Diva Cups to women in Nepal is that it offers an afforfable, safe and reliable alternative to menstruation cloths and has the potential to absolve negative stereotypes surrounding women and their periods. Cowsheds should no longer be used as banishment prisons for women who are menstruating. Let's empower a new generation of young women and educate developing countries on womens rights. It's time to stop making women live in solidarity while experiencing one of the most natural events on this planet!

If you can afford to donate even $5.00 to this cause it will help immensly. Diva cups only cost $35.00 each and I have a lot of extra room in my bag!!

Please help me, help the women that I am going to meet along the way. Together we can make a very big, life long difference in these women's lives!
