Help me fight for OUR Human Rights

Although the fight to have marijuana accepted as a legitimate medication has been over for years now, many employers continue to refuse to recognize this, along with the fact that such is legislated within the Canadian Human Rights law.

My employer is one of those that is resistant to accept this, I discovered recently, after having tested positive for marijuana as a result of a "near miss" incident at work.  I was suspended without pay even though I had informed my manager that I use marijuana to treat symptoms of my disability, as prescribed by a doctor, and that the prescription for it is registered with Health Canada under the ACMPR program. My employer completely ignored that information as well as the related Human Rights legislation when they suspended me. They even went so far as to present me with an ultimatum to "voluntarily" register for a substance abuse program or face immediate termination.

Instead, I chose to file a complaint with the Albert Human Rights Commission, on the basis of discrimination against my disability and the medication that I require for it. The Commission accepted it immediately, but they advised that my complaint might require months or even years to resolve, depending on how my employer responds to it and that civil court action is likely to follow if their decision is unfavourable to my employer.

Given my employer's initial response, I expect that they will prolong the complaint process, knowing very well that it will be extremely difficult, if not impossible, for me to defend myself without an income. Corporations rely on this financial tactic to impose their will in many different ways. So I have come to GoFundMe.com hoping to find financial support for my fight. I'm committed to seeing it through to the end and I believe that with the collective power that GofundMe.com can provide my success in this fight is inevitable.

Donations will be used for legal and associated costs. The benefit to be won in this fight will be shared by everyone. It will help set precedent in Alberta for those who are subjected to similar Human Rights violations by their employers, which will extend to other provinces. It will  encourage employers to adjust their policy manuals to specifically address this type of dispute and to resolve them quickly when they arise. It will help to remove the stigma attached to medical marijuana treatment of disabilities and it will reassure those who seek alternative treatments to their disabilities that they will not be persecuted for it.

Please help me win this fight so that one day you or a loved one won't be forced to fight for OUR Legislated Human Rights.
