She died in Ankara at the peace rally bombings a few days ago on October 10th, 2015 along with 105 others. Her father found her body in the midst of the horror scene. In memory of Dilan, a fundraiser was opened to provide fellowships to archaeology students in Turkey. Many of you have generously contributed to this cause, thank you, and as of today we have collected $7315. This fall, we are starting to offer fellowships to archaeology students in Turkey through the Sirince Archaeological Association. We hope to continue to offer these fellowships in the long term. Our fundraiser is still open for those of you who didn’t have a chance.

Dear friends,
In the last few weeks, you have contributed generously to the memorial funds in remembrance of Dilan Sarikaya, who died in the Ankara bombings a month ago. I have been silent and have not been posting updates because of the elections that took place a week ago in Turkey. After the elections, it became clear to me how important it is to hold onto the memories of our losses. If you have not contributed yet, please consider making a small donation to help us establish a memorial fellowship fund for an archaeology student in Turkey.

In the meantime I have been contacted by several of Dilan’s closest friends. One who has been terribly devastated is Dilan’s namesake Dilan Sulmaz, also an archaeology student at Çukurova. The day before the bombing, the two had just spent a day together when Dilan Sarikaya had visited her to console her. Dilan Sulmaz published recently a very touching letter to her beloved friend. In that letter she wrote: “My dear Dilan, I don’t know how to start my words to you, from which sorrow exactly, I don’t know. I’ve met you the day I started college. I remember asking you for your class notes since I was late, and you said “don’t worry my friend, I will take care of you.” We set the foundations of our friendship with those words… I will never forget the day we pulled an all nighter together, when we laughed, we cried… When they told me about the bombing, I traveled to Ankara at once. I made it to the train station and waited for you, believing you will eventually show up. I see a long haired woman, my heart speeds up, it is not you. With every missed sight of you, my chest becomes heavy. I cry but I still don’t believe it… You’ve completed your struggle Dilan. You’ve left for the last time to bring peace to the hearts of those people with a light of hope. Some day, those slogans of peace will rise from our throats more freely. Rest in peace the daughter of freedom and peace!”

I want to provide you with an update today on the fundraising campaign in memory of Dilan Sarikaya, having just spoken to her father on the phone. Dilan's parents are deeply grateful for the generosity of our community of colleagues and friends, and they have now requested that all the funds collected in this campaign should be used to establish an archaeology fellowship for students in Turkey in memory of their daughter. We hope to set this up in the framework of a civil society organisation, which will make the funds available for archaeology students in Turkey. I hope to use this platform to keep you informed on the process. Thank you again for your thoughtful and kind contributions.

Many thanks and warm greetings to all of you who have participated in Dilan's memorial fund so generously and thoughtfully. On the first day of the campaign we've reached almost 25% of the stated goal. Please do keep telling your friends about the campaign. The outpouring of support from around the world has been overwhelming. my friends in Turkey have been in contact with Dilan's family and friends yesterday. Dilan had a very close friend who was by her side at the peace rally and that friend has been heavily injured and in intensive care at a hospital. We were told that some of these funds may be used by Dilan's family to cover the hospital expenses.
