As many of you know my mom Diane, was diagnosed November 19th, 2016 with stage 4 breast cancer. The cancer has spread to her lungs, which now makes it incurable.
They are going to begin using a hormone blocker and a chemo pill that she can take at home to help at least keep the cancer from growing and spreading any more. This treatment will give her a 22% chance survival rate.
My mom is a strong woman. She has overcome so much already in her life. She had a stroke at the age of 1 and had to wear a brace on her right leg and arm for 15 years. She has no use of her right arm, but can do more with her one hand than most people can with two. She is a fighter and it truly pains me to see her so tired and weak from the cancer eating away inside.
My mom and dad both live here in NC with me and are living off of his retirement and mom’s small disability check. My dad is 80 years old and mom is 64. My husband is the only one who is able to work right now and his income goes towards all of our living expenses. Mom and dad’s income goes towards dad’s medications, doctor bills, and their life insurance policies plus some groceries to help here.
Mom does have Medicare but they make too much for her to qualify for Medicaid. We have to cover what Medicare does not.
The chemo pill they have her taking is outrageously expensive, however the company that makes it offers grants to patients who cannot afford it. She was lucky enough to get a grant for the first 21 days of treatment. We do not know if she will be able to get any more grants for the next round next month or months after and each month’s prescription costs over $3000 out of our pockets.
Mom has been thriving and doing well with this treatment plan and all scans have shown that her cancer is stable. It is not shrinking but it is not growing! However, on June 21st, mom had a stroke and is now blind in both eyes. The stroke also affected her left side and she has no short term memory. They do not know if she will ever gain her sight back.
Her medical bills are piling up and we are barely able to make payments on them.
When we started this GoFundMe page, we were trying to raise money to help in her care and to help her complete her bucket list. Thanks to all who have donated we were able to do a few things she had always dreamed of doing. Now she can not see the things she wanted to see. I would still like to take her to some of the places on her list, even if it's to describe the sights to her, but now what is important to us is to do all we can to help my dad with her care.
There are also a few other things my mom will need in time, such as: a cane to help her feel her way around places, a brace for her right foot, a stool for the shower, and a bedside potty chair that will not be completely covered through Medicare.
There will now be more medications added to her daily list as well.
I will be her full time care giver, taking care of both her and dad, and as I tell them, I am honored to do this. But this means I cannot work to help them cover cost. They will need help and since they make $12 too much a month, they do not qualify for any type of assistance.
I would like to thank everyone in advance who visits this page or who donates to help my mom.
I would also like to ask everyone first and foremost pray for my mom. Send her all of the healing energy that you possibly can. That is the most important thing anyone can do for her right now.
