Our Friend Delvin Ishman was hit by a car this past Friday while sweeping a group ride.  By the grace of God he only has soreness and some raspberries, but his bike, helmet and shoes are a total loss.

Why am I raising money to help replace his bike, helmet and shoes?  Because Delvin is one of the most motivational people in Alabama helping new cyclists to learn to ride and increase their level of endurance through encouragement and a sense of humor that many of us have come to love.

Delvin has not been cycling long himself, but he found himself in a cycling community that is focused on helping beginners, when we helped him, and now he is putting himself in the same place almost every day on the bike.  We NEED Delvin back on the bike to keep making our community stronger.  He is an extremely valuable part of growing this cycling community, and we want to show him how appreciated he is.

He currently has a loaner bike for 3 months.  Would you please consider kicking in what you can to help meet this goal before that time is up?

Delvin is looking into his insurance covering the cost of replacing the bike, and could possibly recover damages from the driver.  Any money collected over the amount needed to replace his bike, shoes and helmet will be donated to UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center.  I will post an update when we hear back on any help insurance might provide.

Thank you all so much for contributing to get Delvin a new bike, helmet and shoes. He is extremely touched by your compassion, and I am as well.

I spoke to Delvin before I started this campaign, and we agreed on a reasonable amount to get him a nice new bike, helmet and shoes. You all met that goal yesterday, and are continuing to exceed it. I had mentioned in the summary that any amount above and beyond the money that was needed for his new bike would be donated to Deep South Cancer Foundation.

I have disabled the donation link for this extremely successful campaign. I met Delvin for lunch today and handed him a check for $3,100.00. Thanks to your efforts, I will also be making a donation on your behalf to Deep South Cancer Foundation for $250.

I just want to take a second to say that I believe that this was a miracle. After I heard about Delvin's accident, I prayed for him to recover and be restored. Last Sunday morning, I got the idea to start this campaign. In four days you more than exceeded what he needed to get a new bike, shoes and helmet.

I believe that when we ask God to move through us, he does. I am going to ask you for one more favor. Delvin is still walking with a limp, and still in some pain from the accident. Please pray for his healing.

Thank you,

Bo

I don't have words to express every feeling that comes from what you, the cycling community, have shown. In just four days so many of you from different communities have come together and raised enough money to replace the bike, helmet and shoes of a fellow cyclist, a friend who was hit by a car.

I suspect that many of you know Delvin, and that maybe there are a few of you that don't, but have read my original post and appreciate the encouragement that he gives to the beginner cyclists in our community. I am amazed by the compassion that you have shown. I am amazed by how the people that I have met in the cycling community will come together as a group and make something happen.

Maybe it is the determination that it takes to do what we do. Maybe it is the fact that we have been where others are before we got here that allows us to extend that helping hand. Whatever it is, what you did is simply beyond words.

I hope that you have the support that you have shown in any difficulties that you come across.

I will be meeting Delvin for lunch tomorrow, and will hand him a check for his new bike, helmet and shoes.

I just spoke to him before finishing this post, and asked him to give me something to tell you. I have never heard so much silence after asking him a question, and then... "I am so thankful, so amazed, at how Christ can move on the heart of the cycling community, in a brother's time of need." -DMI
