The University of Toronto Aerospace Team (UTAT) is Canada’s largest aerospace design team, hosting over 120 undergraduate and graduate students and four technical divisions building satellites, drones and rockets. UTAT’s Rocketry Division is building a hybrid sounding rocket, Defiance, to break the Canadian amateur rocketry altitude record by traveling 15 km into the sky. Defiance is a passion project. All plans are public source, and all work is done outside of the classroom. A successful launch of the final version of the rocket will allow for other student and amateur groups to build low-cost research rockets based on its design. Defiance will be capable of carrying scientific payloads for high-altitude and micro-gravity research thereby enhancing the field, and redefining student innovation. With your contributions, UTAT will be able to complete and thoroughly test this high-performing vehicle to make history.

What We Need & What You Get
Your contributions will help construct the state-of-the-art propulsion system to power Defiance. This includes manufacturing the oxidizer tank, combustion chamber, rocket fuel core, and validating crucial flight systems through low altitude tests. In June we plan on flying a demo vehicle to 5km altitude to verify avionics and recovery systems but your contributions will allow us to test the most important system of all: propulsion.

The Impact
Canadian innovators and passionate engineers have consistently ranked top 3 in international rocketry competitions, however there is so much more we could offer had we only the support needed to fulfill our potential! It is our desire to create a country in which innovators are encouraged to be bold and pursue their dreams. No area of technological excellence is beyond our reach when we have talented Canadians willing to learn and achieve. All of this serves to bring us closer to the ultimate dream of a Canadian, Space Capable Launch Vehicle.
As a contributor you are directly benefiting the Rocketry community of the world by allowing Defiance to build and test this open source design. Once qualification testing is completed, and the launch successful, amateur teams will be able to replicate Defiance to launch their own projects into the lower atmosphere.
Mitigating & Managing Risks
UTAT has nearly fifteen years of design and development experience in the fields of aerospace and engineering, consistently outperforming expectations at design competitions around the world. The current Rocketry Division has been developing rockets for three years with Defiance’s long-term goal in mind. There is no more motivated group for this challenge.
Rocketry presents risks more than most aviation, and a critical system failure can always be lurking around the corner. That’s why Defiance is so thoroughly tested. With dry-run launches and stationary propulsion system tests planned throughout the year, no system will be untested on launch day.
